@QAMsimodo... There are 2 styles of 650 pci cards -- an earlier version out around the end of 2006 had an obvious electronics patch on the back of the card... I'm not aware of anyone reporting on QAM capability one way or another with that earlier model. At any rate, do you have one of those cards & could that be the difference causing problems?

In response to Sub's post: "Does the software supplied with you ATI card pick up any QAM channels?"

The 650 pci cards come with a modded version of Cyberlink's Power Producer [I think -- or one of their apps anyway]. They have a newer version out that ATI tech's say might be released to the general public if/when they get it working fully -- right now the only way to get it is with a new card. It's been confirmed to do QAM in XP & Vista.

"No, it does NOT and ATI never claimed that this card could receive QAM!"

I beg to *almost* differ... :p ATI never updated the original sales copy re: the 650 pci on their site. They did however have 2 versions of the comparison grid up that listed QAM for the cards. I asked tech support about this and was told that yes the 650 pci does indeed support QAM. The original box however, which I still have, does not list the word QAM at all, so in the context of original packaging, QAMsimodo, you are correct.

Personally I didn't see anything that would make a difference IMHO, but I'm dual booting between vista & XP SP3 RC2, and like the original poster it does work in XP with QAM. In another forum another 650 pci owner tried GB-PVR in XP as well, and was able to receive QAM.

As already posted it is necessary to go thru the Config program to add the card, selecting the digital plugin -> the 650 QAM -> your EPG info -> then do the channel scanning/mapping. The tuning assistant WILL NOT pick up QAM channels, and will use the analog tuner on your 650 pci. The card is a hybrid, and you can only use one tuner at a time, so anything using the analog tuner disables the digital - something else to check for, particularly if you have CMC installed...

CMC has one app & at least 3 services that will start with XP otherwise. CMC can also interact with any other Cyberlink software installs you have. When you choose your decoders in Config, you might try another one besides what it shows in your logs -- I've never had luck with that one anyway in WatchHDTV or anything else...

If as in the other thread you think it's signal problems, run a jumper coax if possible right from where the cable enters your home. That would eliminate any splitters, especially the non-digital freq. variety you need to avoid. Personally I can attest that it's very possible to have a good enough analog signal & not enough digital signal strength for the 650's tuner -- the card needs a fairly strong signal. Assuming there's a Best Buy close by (you mentioned you got the card there), they have a couple of RCA branded amps that seem to work OK, or hit up Radio Shack.

Good luck!

@mikiem, thanks for all this information!
This forum is of great help. Earlier today I purchased a HVR 1600 (version 74041), a card which is supposed to tune QAM and also that card did NOT do the trick! I used the cable straight from the wall, no splitters. I now believe that my cable service is the cause of the problems and have scheduled a service call with Comcast cable...
Weird thing is that my TV will pick up QAM, but maybe those tuners are more sensitive that PC card versions?

Again, thanks for your info!

If it helps at all making sense out of digital TV reception, the tuning circuitry & chips used for things like TVs I think seem quite a bit better than those used with PC devices. I have one of those Zenith brand digital TV converters for the DVDR, hooked up to the amped antenna (in the same location) I originally got for the 650 [I get more digital channels OTA than clear QAM Sad ]... The converter has I think a 6th generation LG chip, and it works flawlessly with the antenna, where using the 650 I had to adjust the antenna positioning for every channel, & then the video froze so often it was barely viewable -- you certainly couldn't record anything worthwhile.

If you are going to wind up using some sort of amp, either indoor or outside at the cable drop-off, you might want to look into hardware that can balance or equalize the signal. Right now I have a RCA amp with 4 outputs where the cable comes in, & a 2nd, adjustable Radio Shack amp for the 650, a small TV monitor (for editing), & the DVDR. With the 2 amps I get a good signal to the 650 for QAM, but, for analog it brings up another problem: as the frequency increases the signal is too strong (over-driven?) so higher channels show distortion. Reducing the amount of amplification cures that, but then the lower channels are less clear, not as sharp. Can't give more info than that because I'm still looking into alternatives & haven't done anything about it yet.

I just did another channel scan on my computer, and compared my logs to yours and they looked kinda similar. All of my channels are "Locked=0" in my log, but I can tune QAM? I don't claim to be an expert at this stuff at all. I just tinkered with things till I got the info I needed to add to the dba.ini to get the 650 to work with QAM. I'll attach my log and your log that I compared it to so maybe someone else here could take a look and see if there is something that may help.

One other thing I noticed is that all the channels that show up when I so a scan are stored in a file in the gbpvr\BDA directory called "SCAN-1.CACHE". I think it would be interesting to see what you had in the same file on your computer.

Second other thing... At first I had the first generation ATI 650 with the blatantly apparent hot glue mod on the card, but exchanged it a little over a year ago because it had an issue tuning analog channels from 11 to 21 or so. The card I got in place of it didn't have the big gob of hot glue on it, so I'm assuming it's a little bit newer one.

Update: I had a new cable pulled into the house (Comcast) and my ATI 650 PCI is now receiving QAM! I ended up with 3 ATI 650 PCI cards in 3 different PC's and all of them receive clearQAM (ATI with soldered wires, ATI final version and a VisionTek). I am using the latest version of GB-PVR. Prior to that I was using an HVR1600 - I like the ATI 650 better (better color, less skipping).

So can you tell me what driver version you are using in Vista to get QAM from your 650s?

I'm trying to get QAM in GBPvr out of an AIW HD which uses the 650 Pro chip. I can get QAM in XP by doing manual channel entry, and in Vista using the CMC, but nothing digital at all in GBPvr/Vista.

I've only tried the Catalyst 9.3 (3/18/2009) package at this point.

Sorry I can't help you there - I am running XP.

Update: New Problem....any advice would be very appreciated.... I do notice occasional freezing when watching QAM HDTV. I am alternating between MPEG and Cyberlink decoders, but both have the same issue. I am now running a Biostar TA790GX XE MB, with a 5050e AMD CPU.
