Forcing Horizontal Sync to "On" in the video drivers has always fixed the tearing for me, on Nvidia (GeForce 7300) and ATI (2600-Pro and current onboard X1250), regardless of which renderer or codecs I've tried .

It doesn't help with the slight (but annoyingly perceptible on a 1920x768 projector!) stutter on slow pan shots on VMR9/Custom; VMR9/FSE seems to be the only way to fix that.

EVR under XP is also pretty smooth, but tends to freeze on FFwd in DVDs (ripped or otherwise) unless I use Gabest's MPV Video Decoder, and has aspect ratio problems, even with the MS patch.

What did you buy? I've got tearing too on a 7600gs, using VMR9 Custom on Vista. (for various reasons VMR9 Custom is the only renderer I can use)

i got an ati x1650. If i read the ati site properly it's the best they still make that will fit an AGP slot. It's runs VMR custom and EVR absolutely fine. Having said that I had an ati 9550 (which I think is the same as an x1050) before and that was fine too. My limited experience seems to say that it's just nVidia cards that have this screen tearing problem.

My test machine had a 9500Pro AGP in it, no tearing in VMR9 Custom. I've got PCIe now; I thought the 7600GS I had would be a great card for hooking up to a TV (it has VGA, DVI, Component, S-Video, and Composite), and it was great with EVR...

Other threads I've read say people have had the tearing with ATI as well, but it seems more prevalent with NVidia.

re: AGP, you can actually get all the way up to an HD3850 on AGP, but of course that might be a bit much for an HTPC.

For me, I'm eyeing an HD4550: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814102799. Anandtech claims the HD4350/4550 are currently the best HTPC cards out there.

Luckily I have a customer who needs a dual-output video card to run powerpoint to a remote projector, and they're happy to take my lightly used 7600GS. So I've gone ahead and ordered a Radeon HD4550 from my distributor, will have it tomorrow. I'll report success or failure.

May it be a "quartz.dll" problem? If so try and look for wiki.

I think Microsoft fixed the quartz problem with XP service pack 3 (which I'm on). Also I think the quartz thing was more of a stutter problem than tearing, but I may be wrong.....

my brief internet search seems to show the AGP version is twice the price and twice the size of the PCIE version. Looks like that card needs as much cooling as my whole PC Smile
