Hi Martin,

I appreciate your insights!

I doubt my son wants to interface this with GBPVR - it's just him and his girlfriend and one tv. And their internet works through their cellphone so I dunno how to make a network out of that.

What I'm looking for is just a simple media player and these type of things look cheaper/easier than building an htpc.

If you didn't care about interfacing with GBPVR, networking, etc. do I take it you would lean towards the EGreat? (his birthday is on the 14th so I gotta get something coming soon or look for something else for him)

Thanks!

If you really don't care about GBPVR It really boils down to if you want DTS downmix, component video, or DVD iso playback other EGreat advantages. I'd also wonder how long it will before he has Internet access for YouTube etc. Still the WDTV is pretty attractively priced but it is not necessarily a bargain.

Hi Martin,

Thanks - I think I'll probably pick up an Egreat for my son.

For myself . . . we have an htpc downstairs running GBPVR and a client running upstairs and just love it. We'd like a client in the bedroom, but I can't justify the price of it so I'm thinking a unit such as these would be nice.

I haven't read up much - is it that the Egreat just can't run GBPVR? If it can't, could I still pull the files off the network from the downstairs htpc and play on it using it's own user interface (I wouldn't care about scheduling programs, etc. with this unit)?

If not, then the popcorn hour would be the way to go?

Thanks soooo much for your help! (and patience with the noob!)

The EGreat runs mvpmcx2 (for GBPVR) you can ask Jaggy more here http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=42663 The issue is that the remote
http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=3...stcount=13 doesn't have the colour buttons that are used because of the MVP heritiage. My next mvpmcx2 will map the Info button to the Blue button which is very important, but I haven't figured out what to do with the other colours.

Thanks Martin,

I'm still a little confused but I've decided to stop being lazy and actually do some reading up on all of this! I shoot public fireworks displays so I'm a little busy this weekend, but next week things will settle down and I'll have some quality GBPVR/Forum time.

I'm sure the Egreat will work fine for my son - it's just a matter of what I want to put in our bedroom and I'm in no hurry for that so I have time to do some research.

Thanks for everything, take care,

Steve

I'd suggest that you just enjoy your holiday and forget about reading too much in the forums. So much information is basically junk or obsolete now that you might end up more confused than when you started. I wish I could give a full YouTube demo to show the current capabilities, but that is impossible without infringing on someone's copyright.

So no extra info through this button (media info as in the PC client) as we discussed before? Too bad, though not a major issue.

Hi Martin,

Got an Egreat on the way for my son.

Hard drives . . . any preference/suggestions?

My 1.5TB WD Green drive is working good in my main htpc, but so is my 750GB Seagate in the same htpc. With it sitting out on top of the Egreat though noise may be an issue (I'm thinking stick on rubber feet like the picture I saw). I'm thinking probably a 1TB for him - just need to figure out the brand!

Thanks!

Steve
