This site is apparently gone. Anyone have this tool?

I plugged my Pioneer DVR up along side the HTPC and recorded the same program for a few minutes on both. The problem is with the HTPC setup, because the Pioneer recordings are great using the LP mode which gives 4 hours per 4.7 gb dvd. Playback on the Pioneer says it's playing at 1.5 - 2.5 mbs, and is nearly as good as live -- and that's not even at the SP setting which I never use. I have GBPVR set to record at 5000-9000 kbps variable, and the recordings are not nearly as good. If the Pioneer is a 10, then the HTPC is maybe a 4. Not good enough to, say, record a movie to save.

So, I need to figure out where the problem lies, and I guess the first thing I need to ask is this:

Is the GBPVR / Hauppauge PVR-500 combo capable of really good recordings?

If so, would it be possible for someone to send me a clip as example, along with settings, so that I will know what I am shooting for?

Did you try the suggestion about burning the recording from the HTPC to a dvd a see how the recording quality is? You need to determine if it is a recording or playback issue.

Thanks for the file, and yes, I did burn a dvd. Quality was not good. Must, I guess, be a recording issue. (Not talking about the interlacing issue now. That was solved.)

I spent a lot of $ (for me, anyway) putting this system together just so I could use GBPVR, and, if the quality cannot at least be brought up to that of the Pioneer in LP mode, then I will be very disappointed.

No one has answered yet if this combo is capable of really good quality and at what settings. I would assume that it is. Surely all of the good reviews would not be for what I am seeing thus far.

ok you need a really good signal (and i mean really good)
then the quality gets alot better

on the tweak tool turn up sharpness
turn the temporal filter down mine does not stay saved if i set it to 0 has to be set to 1
you can increase the bit rate but i didnt find that made that much difference for me

in all honesty though i dont think the picture will ever be as good as your pioneer dvd recorder the tuner in there or any tv will be of such a better quality
but you should be able to get it a close second

going digital is the only way you will get it to look as good
if you can digital is the way to go

I don't think the 'combo' has anything to do with it - it's all down to the card as GBPVR (or any recording app) just calls the cards drivers to tune and deliver the data.

Have you tried recording with WinTV?
How are the dvd recorder & PC connected to the LCD? (and how are they connected to the input?)

What is wrong with the quality? Is it blocky, dull, too soft?

No. I don't have WinTV.

DVD recorder is connected to LCD TV via component video/audio inputs. PC is connected via HDMI video input & PC audio.

Not sure what you mean here.

Blocky, splotchy, soft, and if someone turns their head, seems like their face lags behind. Picture a woman's rosy cheeks. If she turns her head, then the rosy cheeks lag and must catch up. I assume this is due to compression. It's a really weird look. It's watchable, but it's not something you want to keep around. Movies are pretty much out. Can't enjoy 'em. News shows are okay.

the lagging behind is the temporal blur
have you tried the tweak tool settings yet?
how new are the drivers you are using also?

What file does the tool modify? Does it go through GBPVR, or what?

I thought Hauppauge tuners were supposed to be at least equal to anything else. Is that not true, then?

I assume you mean recording digital channels with digital tuners? So, not much hope for the analog channels?

Its probably worth trying to install WinTV to see if you get the same behaviour there.

Most Hauppauge analog device owners are happy with the picture there device produces, but we do get the occasional user who hates it for one reason or another. The quality will be slightly less that real TV, since it goes through a lossey compression. Not know what the Pioneer unit produces, its hard to guess whether its better or worse than that.
