The bitrate seemed much less than 8Mb/sec. Its about 0.3 MB (bytes, not bits) per sec.

I raised the retries to 500 and teh standoff to 200000, and I just recorded two news programs. They seem just fine.

So, Thanks for the help.

I'll know for sure tonight, but I think we are set.

Erik:

Well, a "real" show (Numbers) later this evening failed. I found only a few lines like that above, instead of hundreds:

p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
undeclared stream[Id 0x0]
p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
undeclared stream[Id 0x0]
p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
undeclared stream[Id 0x0]
p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
undeclared stream[Id 0x0]
cannot peek while getting new packet, EOF ?
Parsed 9900 video frames and 9860 audio frames of 29.97 fps

Obviously still getting to the end of the file.

I don't really know what I am doing with the two parameters. I arbitrarily raised them, without really knowing how they interact. Is raising them the right thing to do, or should one be raised and the other held still or even lowered? Or should I raise them some more?

Show is 1.134GB for 60 minutes plus 2 minutes pre and post padding, for about 0.3 MB/sec (2.36 Mb/sec).

Any reccomendatins on the two settings? Currently 500/200000

Thanks
Chuck

dvrms uses a buffer of about 100Mbyte, that is 102400 kbytes (standof is in kbytes)
It is written at 0.3 MB/s so calculate the amnount of seconds it takes to fill 100Mbytes, thats 340, so 500 should have been enough.

Do you also see this p_peek message when comskipping a finished recording?

Prior to changing the parameter, I saw it hundreds of times in the failed log ("initial" in the first logs above), and 0 times in teh successful manual operation after the fact.

I changed the parameters, and saw only the four pasted just above here.

So, to answer your question, when it is successful, no p_peek. Even when it only showed 4, it quit and only showed part of the first commercial break.

But, I did change the standoff to 200,000 when I changed the retries to 500. So that shoudl take 666 seconds to fill, and there is my problem. I'll try leaving it at 500, and set the standoff back to 120,000, and hopefully we'll have it fixed.

Nope, will not work
The peek error means comskip is reading empty buffer
The timeout is used to know how long to wait till the file no longer grows.
The standoff is used to know how far to stay away from the end of the buffer
They always should be set together.
If dvrms preallocates a 200MByte buffer then you need to set the timeout at 2 times the reguklar timeout, that is 700.

Erik:

I reverted back to the 120MB buffer and set the retires to 600. All appears well now. Thanks for the better understanding of these parameters.
