That's why I love the popcorn hour - I dont have to worry about codecs or anything - it's a nice compact client that plays everything.

thanks all for your replies.. I do have the ATI mux installed and will try that when I get home.

While I agree with you that PCH is a very nice and compact solution, I can't seem to justify the cost... I can build a decent PC for $200 that allows me to surf as well.

now all i need is a good USB IR blaster.
thanks.

Impressive - where do you get your parts? Keeping my builds under $500 is a strain - an OEM edition of Windows alone is at least $100...

newegg.com has cheap stuff after rebates and free shipping - you just have to keep looking. I have access to spare drives, cases and power supplies so those are not an issue. An MB, CPU, memory can run to $100 after rebates, and then add the XP license.

And after all that work and effort putting all that used stuff (that was largely replaced because it wasn't good enough) they make for a great system .... in an computer room or a dorm. XP is over too, although many people seem to be in denial.

Martin

I'm one of those in denial Wink

I plan to step up to Windows 7 sometime in the coming months though.

BTW - I shop newegg all the time & don't know that I could scrape together a MB/CPU & memory for under a century w/o sacrificing heavily on performance - especially when playing back HD - I haven't found many on board GPU's that will cut it - especially on a budget MB.

I have a good (and cheap) client on vista home premium ($79) that I built using good newegg deals for less than $200 (black friday). It does HD just fine. That said, I likely will go to an egreat for the next client. That is what is great about this. You can have many solutions for the same problem, and pick each one to fit the room or needs. A PC in the living room is great for me, but I want a small client just for viewing in the bedroom. And during all this I learn a lot about clients, streaming, drivers, etc. Hobbies are not always practicalWink

Back to this thread, you can use the ATI mux to get mpeg, but then you loose the multirecord capabilities of the digital tuners. The PC clients work pretty well, but really rely on setup and a variety of factors. Some will be happy, some won't be. A more bullet proof client would be nice, but hey, this is a free progam, and most of all a hobby. Smile

People can always get bargains, I'm talking normal prices not standing in line to buy each piece. The OEM Vista with Win 7 upgrade is $110, once you add PowerDVD or CoreAVC, and a remote you are into the EGreat range without even buying a PC.

my primo client:

intel 5200 CPU $65 from buy.com
Zotac MB $35 from newegg.com after rebate
256 MB Video card $15 - after rebate
2 GB memory $5 - newegg after rebate
500 Watt PSU - $20 - after rebate
old 40 GB IDE drive, DVD rom and case
XP home license from defunct machine.
wireless keyboard/trackball combo $23 from buy.com - I should've bought more of these - they don't have them anymore.

HD plays fine... and so does Guitar hero III with 2 guitars.

Without spare parts, that actually proves me point. $163 + $110 for a new OS + $40 for an acceptable case + $30 for the remote (for WAF) + $15 for CoreAVC buys a low end system @ $358 that you probably could not sell on ebay for the price of an EGreat
