Well I won't be offering a zip as well, if they want that they can just use the installer version or download the free 7zip which is a damn good program to de-compress the 7z file.

I think I am rehashing this from when sub added 7zip to the forums, but I remember when it was a challenge to get people to move to zip from arc.

I think this is at least a double headed beast Martin Big Grin

Perhaps a Hydra!

I have no problem with adding .7z to the wiki. It all depends on the end user and what Sub would like. If N-PVR is still going to inhabit a similar space to GB-PVR then all of these things should be more specialist. If however he would like N-PVR to be more 'end user' based then I am of the thinking that things need to be less complicated.

I have enough problems explaining to people they should look in their Junk email box in Outlook let alone how to do anything even more complicated. It is boring and tiresome, I'm looking for direction here too Wink

great discussion

Yup, I think that is a very good call. Installer version or suitable program to de-compress 7zip (haven't used 7zip meself). Just put that detail on your wiki page, good to go Big Grin

But that does mean we need to allow for 7zip upload! Will check.

Something has been really bugging me about this, I thought that pmwiki should allow .7z by default, so I just tried:

http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...ikiSandbox

perhaps just because a small file it allowed it?

Jaggy Wrote:Normally I wouldn't upload a 7z file to the wiki but it was only for users that don't like using the installer version of my skin which I do upload as a zip file & seeing the 7z file is 3763KB & the same contents in a zip file is 4136KB I thought 7z was better in this case.

The installer version is in a zip file, so download, double-click and run - uncomplicated.

If you want more control over the install, hopefully you will know what you are doing, so you'll probably have some extra tools like 7zip installed anyway...

That's what the error message that I quoted in the first message of this thread said....here is the error again "BlueRetroVE.7z: file is larger than allowed maximum of 2097152 bytes for '7z' files" so until the size is increased......................

Yup that's a good nod as far as I can see, straight back to beginning of thread. Wiki has no inherent problem with .7z as an upload but seems to be limited on size as compared to .zip. (I think .zip has been 'upped' on its limit to 4MB but obviously no extra parameters have been set for .7z) With no parameters I think wiki defaults to 2MB upload for individual files which would make total sense with what you're doing and hence error.

Of course to play devil's advocate if .7z was 'upped' on its limit to say 4MB then why would not someone else come along and say but I want to upload a 3.5MB .tar? Etc etc etc .... Big Grin

I don't think you will have any problem slipping this by Wiki Day admin, I'm just the grumpy night watch!

great stuff

I see no problem with allowing a larger file size upload of a .7z here (apart from my previous comment about other users then saying but what about my .tar etc etc) Could it be that given this is new wiki we could agree some constraints need to be placed in order? (This does have to be managed in some way, even though it is a wiki!) Allow .7z with a greater size limit? But not all compressed file formats should be given 'carte blanche'? There have to be some limitations otherwise becomes a 'free for all'?

I will recommend this as a very reasonable 'include' but can you bear with us as the wiki is held on Sub's server and any tweaks like this require a new upload to his server with input by Sub needed. At this point in time we are trying to not overload Sub with anything he doesn't really need to know (or have to deal with)! And also always best to upload a bunch of changes in one hit. Duly noted with my very not grumpy head on. .7z in with 4MB limit (as far as I would recommend).

Don't know why, I really must be in a good mood Wink
