Some good advice here so all I will add is that the MCE standby tool is a nice easy way to list all the devices that can wake the pc up if you don;t want to go through every device in device manager. Last week it showed me that it was my network card that kept waking my gaming pc up minutes after it went to sleep.

gEd, no problems with Standby tool in W7? I was using it in Vista (for obvious reasons as Vista was awful with sleep) and I wasn't aware if there were any problems in 7 though I see you're runn W7 x64 so I assume all is good.

yep all is good.
I am running W7x64 on npvr and games pc, both with MCE standby tool. TBH once you have your standby / wakeup issues nailed, I am not sure it is really needed for npvr users. I may remove it at some point but it causes no harm keeping it there and is occasionally useful as stated above.

My nPVR PC does periodically develop into a state whereby it fails to go to sleep but I can't be arsed to spend hours debugging it so a reboot fixes that for a few more weeks. MCE ST says it's "a driver" ...thanks...

Me too. This is why I posted recently asking how to detect if a recording is being made. I do a reboot every day post EPG update after 2:30 as soon as no recording is being made.

I used the hibernate trigger thingie (or was it wake or similar) and I made it do a reboot if it came out of hibernate and the hour was 07.
The theory being that if it comes out of hibernate there should be a few minutes before the recording starts and the 07 wakup would be just before 0800 and my EPG update followed by my backup.

er...so you were getting it to reboot when it comes out of hibernate to fix standby issues? :-D

Yup, but only the first startup of the day - rebooting fixed the "not going into hibernate/standby" and also where the USB tuners failed from hibernate after a few days.

If windows could wake the machine to record from "power off" rather than standby or hibernate then that would have been ideal - but it doesn't, so the above was a get-around.
