Sub, I checked and can confirm that the MainConcept demux does the trick with ATSC and QAM. It doesn't work with analog recordings though, although the data is there and plays in VLC.

Great.

I wouldnt expect to get closed captions with analog recordings, except for maybe a very small number of hardware encoder devices (PVR250/350 and a couple of others). The other devices will not capture Closed Captions in the output stream.

As I wrote my HVR 1600 does and it's in the data stream. All the Hauppauge's sold in North America pretty much have to support this.

If you supply a small sample recording, I can take a look.

That's not true in the way you think. WinTV7 will record and playback closed captions with all Hauppauge devices sold in North America, but most of these use a proprietary scheme for the closed captions, and you'd find those closed captions are not usable from other applications (like VLC etc). Its only a few devices like the 1600 that store the closed captions in the same place as the info would be in a digital broadcast.

Ok, sorry you would certainly know this much better, than I do. Here you have http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WMFP40HW an 18MB sample.

I've made a slight tweak to the next release to also support closed captions with the Microsoft DTV-DVD decoder, and this gives captions on that sample file.

Are you specifically looking for these pin names? I use the Cyberlink decoders which are named "~Closed Caption Out". Would it be possible to add support for those?

I think ffdshow uses that too.

I just tested a MPEG-2 QAM recording done by the HDHomeRun

  • Works:
    1. MainConcept (HCW) MPEG-2 Video Decoder ~CC Out
    2. ATI MPEG Video Decoder ~CC Out
    3. SageTV MPEG-2 Video Decoder ~CC Out

  • Does not work:
    1. CyberLink Video/SP Decoder ~Closed Caption Out
    2. CyberLink Video Decoder ~Closed Caption Out
    3. ArcSoft Video Decoder ~CC Out
    4. Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder ~Line21 Output
    5. Intervideo Video Decoder ~Line21 Output
    6. Intervideo NonCSS Video Decoder for Hauppauge ~Line21 Output

Notes:
  1. With sub's fix for the MS decoder, that and probably the Intervideo decoders will be moved to the "Works" list.
  2. I'm not quite sure why the Arcsoft decoder doesn't work.
  3. I don't have ffdshow installed so it was not tested.
  4. LAV video decoder does not have a pin for Line21 output so I didn't bother to test it.

It should also work for the CyberLink/Intervideo decoders in the next release. I haven't tested it though.
