System Plugin - New Test Release (29th Jan)

I certainly don't want anything like Shutdown, Reboot or Quit in a default menu layout.

Actually, in saying that I'm not sure what 'Quit' does (sorry haven't downloaded this version yet). If 'Quit' is just an exit kind of function to leave the plugin then that can be done with the Esc key on a PC or the various remote buttons surely?

I'd disagree on the importance of hiding these options, despite moving to the hidden menu. It's the "system" plugin after all (and mirrors all the options from the same screen in GBPVR). To me it's where you'd want to go to do this stuff. All the power options have "are you sure" confirmation prompts too (if you want them).

As for "Quit", it's the new name for what was "Exit", and quits NPVR itself. It couldn't be called Exit anymore because an "Exit" event is generated when the menu loses its focus which caused the button to fire if it had the same name.

Yeah, Jaggy's given me some skin code for that, but I've not tried it yet. Is it really as many as you want, or just as many as will fit?Iain

I struggled with the wording a bit since I knew that infinitely small buttons could be difficult to read, but because the text for @button#Selected can be larger than the button itself I think want was ok.

This is why I don't like the top menu for this *particular* application. I want to go in here and see these by default because that's what I expect of a System menu. I suspect this functionality may not exist, but for something like this I wish the top menu was shown by default rather than a remote button toggle. Much of the time it makes sense to auto hide it, in this case I'm not entirely sure.

I disliked the gbpvr System plugin for the same reason - regardless of whether there's a prompt for "are you sure", my reason for using it is to get 'system' information, I don't want power options as a first choice menu item.

My system runs 24/7 without sleep or hibernation - probably just paranoia on my part as I've run 24/7 systems for years and a first choice ability to shutdown/reboot makes me shudder (even with an "are you sure" prompt);

Nope, not for me. The point I'm trying to make is that this particular plugin has functionality that one might expect "in your face" instead of a hidden (by default) menu. Down the road, there might be others. Who knows?

We've all been using sub's wares for a long time. Ask yourself: is a new user going to download this software and expect to find a hidden menu via remote by pressing 1 of 4 random colored buttons on it?

Working in IT support, I can say with certainty that I could write down on a piece of paper next to a given device, "press the blue button, then press red button, and then the yellow button" and I'll STILL have people calling me saying, "what button do I press first?" but if it's on the screen and easily viewable, they can manage better.

Again, this is only my opinion as part of the discussion.

That screenshot doesn't show the default order btw; that's just the way I like it. The default is actually Back, Update EPG, Shutdown, View, Quit, but you can pick any order you want. Because of the max-of-5-visible issue, I disabled the ability to hide options (figuring the menu would do it instead), but if I move to a Power popup and hence less menu buttons again, I might reinstate that. That might keep *some* of you happy

If that's important to you, I could add it, but maybe being able to hide options (see above) would do?

I know these types well and they are precisely the sort of people I wouldn't want to have this type of functionality...

As part of his rebuild, Iain has chosen to give his menu the same look and feel as the other NPVR menus and I would have to agree with that - I don't have any problem with the hidden menu concept - in fact I quite like it, especially the extra screen real estate it releases...

And to get back on topic, it's working just fine for me. Nice work Iain...

I don;t have any problem with the top level menus as long as they are being used for non-critical functions (such as changing sort order, view layout etc). In fact I really appreciate having such options functions off the main menu. One left arrow press to access...not a big deal in my view.

I guess people get rightly nervous when they see the screenshot and see shutdown as the first option (rather than the 4th as it seems to be now on mine). One wayward remote macro or extra keypress and boom.

feature request for when you are bored........: how about some kind of email alert system for when disk space drops below < X (absolute) or Y% (relative). just a thought..
