happy to click one, once a day if it helps?
Do you get more $$ if we actually buy stuff through these links (I have one for amazon.co.uk atm)?

I dont think so. It's mystery to me how Google's algorithms work though.

Nope...Google make money from Amazon if you click on the ad.

Google pay a tiny fraction of what they get from Amazon to sub.

Amazon makes money from you if you buy something - sub gets nothing from that deal.

I knew I had three options yesterday before I posted my original message so I plunked for the one that may have added to the funds sub collects for the forum, as that was a no go & I'm the only one they annoy (BTW it was the animated ones that really annoyed not the static ones) I have now gone for option two & installed AddBlockPlus to Firefox (I did used to use AddBlock years ago but something (that I can't remember) used to not work with it installed so I stopped using it) & now it displays like in the attached screenshot which was what I was willing to pay for.

From an email I got just the other day from a different site.....

I was looking into how to conditionally do it, but hadn't got to a solution yet.

Jaggy, if you temporarily try disabling the adblock, you'll see the add at the top is missing for you (and others that have helped with pre-release testing). The one at the bottom is still there.

funny, this has all actually gotten me paying attention to the ads a bit and even clicking on a few. Just clicked on an ad for a new show on ABC called Last Resort. The trailer looks interesting, but like all such shows whether I like it really depends on where they go with it. The networks seem to require at least the threat of sex on all drama shows, hence the absurd inclusion of a female officer on a submarine. It'll go on the recurring recording list, at least for awhile.

I also don't pay any attention to the ads and barely notice them. What does seriously annoy me is when the add server is overloaded and the bits of the page you do want take ages to load waiting for the add. Not that I've noticed this on this forum much but it does happen elsewhere.

Likewise I have just clicked on the add at the top of the page for fun. It's for a hotel right next to the work building I'm currently in so dont think I'll be staying there any time soon!

The ads at the top of the main forum page did not bother me, but now there is one at the bottom as well. Maybe the brightly colored John Deere tractor caught my eye. Anyway, with two ads we now give up quite a bit of space. I was OK with one, but two seems too much. I suppose now you'll tell me the bottom one was there all along. Smile

Gone for me now although they didn't bother me before. Now that you can disable them for certain people, you should create a "Gold Member" group that removes the ads for paid subscribers like that on AVS Forum and have different membership timeframes. You might even make more than you do off the ads Big Grin

For my pennie's worth

From what I understand donations have NEVER covered the cost of you having to host etc all this stuff anyway.

And we are all so lucky that you have stuck with us and pursued your software.

It is a double edged sword....

On the one hand go with this new and cr**py way of trying to generate a little more income to cover costs, or on the other:

Don't and then perhpas you lose interest because the project does not cover your expenses/outlay?

A v difficult call.

IIWMO I would err towards dropping some really shitty ads and try to find a way to get those donations upped? But how, don't know? I would have to go with Jaggy who started this. I do find ANY website that throws ad's right in my face a complete turnoff, I don't buy from them and always back completely away. I guess a possible solution is where the ad's are placed not sooo in your face? But I bet once again the vBulletin software restricts this with ad's only top and bottom?...

cheers all steeb
