If you've got the WinTV 7 software installed, you should have the MainConcept decoder as well. It should do the job too.

I'd recommend getting a newer graphic card, the ATI 6450 is an excellent card at a fair price.

I'd maybe try the ffdshow decoder, but go into the "..." settings, and make sure you've got MPEG2 enabled. Most versions have MPEG2 disabled by default.

Ok, I set the video renderer back to EVR and selected ffdshow for the MPEG2 decoder. It plays video and audio perfectly. I still don't get any info on the screen when I move the mouse (ie progress bar, name of recording, etc) but at least it's usable.

In the "..." settings for ffdshow, I see there are several things which can be selected for OSD, I certainly never saw any of this before! Only the progress bar and recording filename.

Once I got NPVR up and running earlier this winter, I uninstalled WinTV. I don't see MainConcept.

I thought about a graphics card, but the pc is getting old, so I'm hesitant to put more money into it. Thinking of getting a whole new pc...

Well, at least it's usable, it's good enough for me. Thanks for the help everyone!

As long as you're using EVR you should be getting OSD graphics (unless the EVR renderer is broken on your machine). It's unrelated to the OSD setting inside ffdshow - you can ignore those.

Do you get OSD graphics with VMR9?

If you buy the PCIe version you can safely use it on your new computer as well, provided you buy a new motherboard, ram and cpu. A cabinet and power supply from 2005 should be perfectly reusable, so no need to buy the entire computer Smile

No OSD with VMR9

I tried it with all the decoders in my list:
EVR and VMR9 - no OSD, played ok
VMR9 Custom - no OSD, played with heavy stutter
VMR9 FSE - window with 'unhandled exception' keeps popping up
VMR7 - no OSD, played ok
Overlay - no video, no audio - weird

Reddward - only the motherboard, ram and CPU? :-) I will also need to get a new OS. I will price it out when the time comes but I think it will be less expensive to buy a package than to get individual components. Canada is a funny place that way. In any 'case', (bad pun), the case on my current pc is annoying because it makes buzzing sounds. It started making these noises when I added a second hard drive, and they turn at different speeds. I had a 'tourniquet' made from string that I would tighten by twisting a pencil, but sometimes it would break and the pencil would fly off. I much prefer the old towers (from the days of 386, 486, etc), they had screws holding everything together instead of the click together stuff that the newer ones have. Anyway, getting quite a bit off topic here Smile

|o| That's the first time I'v heard someone use a tourniquet on a case Big Grin but I see your point. I also prefer the old fashioned cabinets. Have you tried a lower screen resolution to see if the OSD returns?

Ok, so at first I thought yeah I had already gone through that link for reinstalling DirectX, but in fact it was only the web installation that it had done, which didn't actually take place since it said the files were already there. I redid it with the full installer. After that, rebooted and tried NPVR playback again - same result no OSD.

Tried going to a lower screen resolution. That seems to have done the trick. I was originally at 1024x768. Went to lower resolution one step at a time and had no OSD until I got to 800x600. At this setting, I get the OSD, yay! Strange that I had the OSD before though. Font size is a bit BIG at this resolution, but I can live with that.

Here's a screenshot of what I'm getting. (by the way the image on the screen has nothing to do with Time Team, it was part of a commercial just before Time Team)

Glad to see another fan of Time Team Smile Smile I'm particularly fan of Bridget

Edit: Lowering the resolution and getting OSD indicates lack of video memory, as I suspected.
