Try this: http://reclock.free.fr/

What is ReClock?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Said simply the purpose of ReClock is to definitely get rid (I hope) of jerky playback of AVI and MPEG material on a PC (or a PC connected to a TV).

ReClock is born from my own frustration. I have a fast PC, a good video card, and when I play a DVD or DIVX on my brand new Home Cinema, I get dropped frames here and there for no reason, or a completely jerky and un-watch able movie. This is very annoying.

The following sections will give you a complete and I hope clear explanation of what cause jerky playback, and how ReClock will try to solve these problems.

The last section will give you the instructions on how to install and use ReClock.

Ok. I just re-coded the a specific non-working xvid file to xvid with lousy quality: 100kbit/s bitstream and the sound is now synched.

I still don't think this is a network problem, so right now I'm making a high quality mpeg file with a bitrate similar to the original AVI file. If I understand this correctly then a specific bitrate in the xvid file would be larger when it's re-encoded to mpeg. So basically I should try to re-encode to mpeg with even a higher bitrate than the original xvid. Is there any guidelines around this? 1.5 2.0 times the avi?

Also, I have now figured out that the xvid files are of the ntsc format and I have a pal MVP. How can I change that fact in real time during the re-encoding phase?

I created a huge mpeg file now, with a bitrate of 3800kbit/sec, compared to the original 1002kbit/sec on the xvid file.

Is there a way to know what the mpeg result of the mpeg file generated by the transcode process looks like? Just so I can tick of the network as a potential cause for problems.

I have looked into the links posted above, thanks for them, but they all seems to work with non-real time conversions, I must convert from NTSC to PAL in real-time, if at all I need to convert. I guess I should try a low performance xvid with NTSC format..... Be back.

Reclock is real time. It was the designer's point to fix his viewing, not encoding.

I don't use it, but I found the guy who does the site below--and has some credibility w/ pvr issues--uses and recommends it. I htink he's not US either.

Capone: Thanks. You have pointed me to good resources, I have definitely bookmarked them all.

I have now made numerous different files listed with results listed below:

AVI files
  • 3800kbit/sec NTSC = Several seconds sync error
  • 100kbit/sec PAL = no sync problem
  • 3800kbit/sec PAL = never tried (doing it now) but in real-time using the transcoder the sound/video are heavily unsynched.

MPEG
  • 3800kbit/sec NTSC = less than a second sync problem
  • 3800kbit/sec PAL = no sync problem

I think the tests above meens that the network is fine, that the NTSC/PAL thing isn't the main problem but that the real-time re-encoding is doing something on my system....

I consider this thread as closed now when I have found the problem and a solution.

It all was a question of PAL/NTSC, and when by using Hauppauge original software it's possible to set what oupt format the signal should be. Works great. A bit annoying to have to set it all the time, but atleast I don't have to reencode.

Unfortunately doesn't the solution allow GB-PVR, so I'll raise another question/thread for that specific question.
