In - at least - Europe there are tv stations that broadcast either VPS or PDC signals. Video Programming System (I think) and Program Delivery Control. That is a signal that is broadcast along with the show, when it is started and when it is ended. The signal carries information about when the show was actually scheduled to start and end, giving VCR's the oportunity to start and end the recording at exactly the correct time, no matter when the show was actually aired (given reasonable delays, I assume :-))

There was a huge fuzz about this when the first VCR's came with these features. Too bad no stations (at least here in Sweden) ever used VPS/PDC :-) I have no idea what the status on this is in the rest of the world. Good idea, no implementation =)

VPS = Video Programing Signal.
it was used by networks to transmit a singnal when the program begun (to prevent delays), and the video would start recording from the minute he got that signal only.

VPS (video program system) is a signal which is sent in the blanking interval (of line 16) of the tv broadcast and is used to inform videorecorders that a show starts early or lasts longer than expected...

if i recall exaclty, the term VPS is only used in the german part of europe... i think the same system in english is called PDC (program delivery control), but i'm not 100% sure if it's exactly the same.

update: ups... i was too slow, sorry *g* goddamn browser-cache *g*.
AMD 1600mHz, 512 M RAM, 20+160 GB drive, Hauppauge PVR-350 + PVR-150 + PVR-150MCE, Win XP Pro SP3, using software decoding.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

No, it doesnt support it, and I have plans to support it in the future. This is not something we use here in New Zealand.
