WOL Server on additional pc

I am trying this one. I am puzzled where to fill-in the MAC address. I tried in the 'Start parameters' in the Services applet, but the system does not remember this setting. So I have to manually start the service after every reboot of my 'permanently-on' machine?

The MAC is set in the config file in the place where you installed the program.
Why don't you take a look at the readme file you lazy...

Well, I think I will encounter a problem with waking up the machine ultimately, bvut I am not yet there.

I just (3 minutes ago) noticed that after I have launched the 'WOL Service', the MVP does not complete the first phase of loading it's software. (I had my GBPVR server still on). So I had to stop the WOL service first, let the MVP boot properly, and switch it of with the remote
Here I have to interrupt my experimenting. Hopefully more later tonight

In principle this triangular WOL works OK. I do encounter a number of problems however:
1) If I bring the GBPVR server to hibernation from the console everything works nicely after activating the MVP with the remote control..
2) If I bring the GBPVR server to hibernation from the MVP 'system plugin', the system does not come to live by itself.
3) The GBPVR system is set to go into hibernation after 30 minutes of inactivity. I did two tries sofar. One success, and one failure.

Any others who have experience with this utility?

Well what I think happens is: when you hibernate the server the MVP immediatly searches for it and WOL packets are being sent to wake server while it's trying to go to sleep. I guess it gets confused and locks.

I may change the WOL utility to ignore the first server locator broadcast from MVP. It'll allow 8 secs for the computer to hibernate and you will have the time to turn off the MVP before it triggers WOL.

btw,
In my system I've set the time before sending PC to sleep to only 10 min. I never use the hibernate button anymore. I mostly use the PC for watching recorded shows and surfing the internet so it works for me.

Nothing to do with MVP but anyway:
I just got a MCE remote today and I'm so happy that I now can wake my computer from s3 by pressing the powerbutton on the remote. yippee!!
Since the computer is behind a glass door in a cabinet I think it's well spent money, and WAF on the HTPC set gets higher to

You are right in your observation that the MVP starts searching again. That's what I observe from the screen. Obviously shutting the machine down from the system plugin is not the way to go. Probably not worth spending much effort on at this moment.
What remains awkward in the setup is that the first boot phase of the MVP's does not complete if the MVP WOL Service is running.

I don't know much about networking and broadcasting in general but I can't see how a running MVP WOL service would have any effect on the MVPs loading. All it does is broadcasting WOL packets aimed for the HTPC, no communication directly with the MVP. For all I know the MVP will never know there is someone else but a MVP-server (GB-PVR) listening.

What do you mean by "first boot phase" is it before the dongle is loaded?
I have from time to time experienced some problems booting and loading dongle and even connecting to server, but wouldn't say that has changed to the better or worse since I started using the MVP WOL Service. (I use S3 so the HTPC will be up and running in like 2-3 secs after receiving a WOL packet)

When everything is setup correctly you should only see "connecting to server..." before you get GB-PVR on the screen.
A possible cause for problem is if the "preferred server" is not responding fast enough (since HTPC is just starting up) then the MVP might enter an other state and start looking for "dongle" servers.
- I don't know just guessing.

I will do some testing and see if I can find something out regarding timing.

Thanks for the responses. I don't understand either. Both my MVP's (rel D3) have the same behaviour. They won't load the dongle (what I called first boot phase) until I stop the MVP WOL Service. I repeated this three times with the GBPVR PC switched on! Very strange. Hope somebody else can explain, because my knowledge of network protocols is also rather limited.

As said the dongle server was switched on in my case.

I have a problem remaining with hibernation, but that has more to do with my machine setup than with your software. Unfortunately the threads on hibernation/standby have not yet been summarised on the WIKI, so I will have to dig first through all those threads. Will take some time, because I have other duties coming up for the next week. So there may be some silence from my side.

I remain curious if others have experimented with this 'MVP WOL Service'. Even though I don't have it fully operational yet, I recommend others to have a serious look at it.

Can you clarify on this? no (other) MVP services. Is that including hauppage MVP services even if I disable or set to manual. How about GBPVR services?
