I personally use standby.

but by putting my machines to standby and buying CFL bulbs I literally cut my power bill in half

I've got two PC's that actually work properly in standby mode.
My server & the PC i'm putting in the bedroom.
The one for the bedroom is the only PC i've managed to get to turn on with my MCE remote.

CFL's are nice.
They last longer, especially in Fans & lights mounted to wall & ceilings near exterior doors.

Their a little dim in the dead of winter if used outside, but hey the ones outside have been there for 2+ yrs.

That never happened with your standard bulb.
