I did some more testing and it looks like my quality profiles are ignored altogether. Looking at the bitrate on the final file leads me to believe it is using the high profile. I changed that one but it did not have an effect. So far, no matter what I do I always get the same quality of recording. I'm using analog sources as well so quality should come into play, right?

What type of capture card are you using? Bitrate control is only possible with some of them.

Yeah, I'm guessing its not able to set the bit rate on this device. Its not one I've tested before.

A lot of manufacturers use their own proprietary mechanism for changing bitrates. GB-PVR tries setting it a few different ways. If it cant find a method that works, then you get whatever the default is for that device.

Devices from manufacturers like Hauppauge will change bitrates without any problems.

Would that apply to the resolution as well?

So my only option (with my hardware setup) for a smaller file is to transcode it to a different format?

Yes, most likely. Or just make do with the defaults bitrate/resolution produced by your capture device.

Do you know enough about Media Center to say how it's able to give me different qualities with the same hardware?
