can you turn off firewalls on both machines completely (rather than allowing apps) to see if this solves the problem.

Well, the problem is currently "solved". I.e. it works but I'm not sure exactly why.

But, while I was debugging the problem one of the things I had tried was turning off both firewalls and it didn't make any difference.

My client was working great in 1.3.7 but once I went to 1.3.11 I'm no longer able to setup any shows to record off the Client TV Guide. Everything else works great any idea's???

Reproduce the problem, then post the logs and I'll take a look.

Seems the client sees the db as readonly. Make sure the db share has write priviledges.

Code:

That was it thanks, set up my client user full access to the gbpvr share and works like a champ. Weird that the share had everyone with read only permissions, good old MS never figure out why we just have to make it work..:-)

I had a slight problem with my client as well because I set PVRX2 to start up automatically when windows started up and it would display the same behavior with the white screen and red X. I determined that the router DHCP was not handing out an IP address fast enough and the client was not able to see the server when it started up. I changed the IP address to be static and that solved the issue. Not sure if this applies to you but just sharing in case it might.

I have been having similar problems to Jimi and Rowland in getting PVRX2 to work as a client.
My setup is a little atypical as the server is also going to be a web/mail server permanently connected to the internet so I didn't want to share any part of the C: drive ( call me paranoid). I set the e: drive as a share and put all my content in there with shared folders for music , photos , recordings etc. I put the gbpvr.db3 database file in the shared e:\database\ folder.

I edited the server config.xml file to use the e:\database\gbpvr.db3 database file.

The server was working fine and using the database in its new location.

When I started PVRX2 on the laptop - which is set to be a client, with the servername and database location setup - I got the .net framework errors and red cross through the ap screen as Jimi.

Looking through the recordingservice.log file on the client I saw an error that it could not find \\server\database\config.xml , so the client is trying to use a config.xml from the database share, and not from its own c:\program files\devnz\gbpvr\ folder.

I copied the client config.xml file to the \\server\database\ folder and hey presto the client now works.

So if I have multiple pc clients they will all be using the same config.xml file ( the one on the \\server\database\ folder ). This could be a problem where different clients have different graphics capabilities with one using VMR9 another using overlay , or different dvd drive letters. Can each client use its own config.xml file from its own drive ?

It only uses the server config.xml for certain bits of info. The rest of the time it uses the local config.xml, including for video/music/photo library directories etc.
