zehd- The wiki IS a huge help and resource for me (and many others). As you know, it will never be easy plug and play because this is an evolution. TIVO or cable company DVRs are for the group that wants an easy way out. I feel your pain for trying to document a moving target. Zap2it and pvr 150s made life easy. Now HD in 3 (or more)different ways, clients, dual cores, quad cores, Vista, PCH etc.etc.etc.

Anyway, don't let the questions get to you and fall into the trap of people calling your work poor. Most of us work in technical jobs and are used to people crapping on it. I remember sub once basicially told someone to f-off. For the most part we are the kindest, easiest to get-along-with board around. I am proud of that, and of all the work we all have put in. Be proud of your work, and let's keep on digging.

Now where on the wiki does it tell me about telepathic channel changes on the popcorn hour?

mvallevand Wrote:I have to agree with skycyclepilot that mapping the EPG especially for digital channels has a signficant learning curve and the online info isn't much help. I know in a post somewhere sub said it should take 15 minutes for the mapping, but (when I did have choice on clear QAM) the 40 marked channels all UNKNOWN (00/AC#) took me hours to figure out.

Once I found the Silicon Dust site I was able to map a lot faster because I didn't have to use two televisions. It isn't any better with other programs though. The fact there are transient channels for on demand programming don't help either.
It defense of the digital mapping process - its a lot easier for DVB-S/DVB-T/DVB-C/ATSC users, since the channel names are present in the stream. QAM users definitely have longer more manual process to go though.

Not receiving QAM test signals makes it kind of painful to come up with something better for QAM channel mapping. If I had to deal with QAM for my own usage, I'd have come up with something simpler by now.

Sorry sub, I wasn't suggesting that there was anything GBPVR could do, and mapping ATSC channels is a breeze. It's just a pain that we in North America have to live with. After years of almost plug and play NTSC support that PAL users never saw, the situation is just reversed.

Once you spend that first hour or so it is quite easy which is good because cable companies like to move the channels around.

To Fatman_do,

This software is for a leisure activity so I was not prepared for abuse. Frank Zs attitude has shown me that answers equal being treated badly rather than assistance. I'm really not game to ask anything for fear of being treated like a fool. It's bad enough having to swallow this garbage in a work environment and the fact that there appears to be a growing propensity for this type of aggression in general in the world today. I fail to see how you can accept this intolerable demeaning of someone merely seeking help. Nice people don't take this attitude nor do intelligent people put it on display. To ignore is to condone by default and yes, abuse is a waste of my time. Sorry to be so negative but that's how I feel, just being honest! I'll leave you all alone now because this needs to stop.

I am sorry, but I still feel your sample size is rather small. I have every expectation that if you would have posted a question, no matter how trivial, it would have been answered without any "abuse".

The first post in this thread was in an adversarial tone, and Zehd took offense to it. If you would have followed up in the other support thread by the original poster, you would have seen it was actually Frank Z giving "spot on" information and assistance. Sometimes it is give and take, and I am not here to hold anyone's hand.

Folks, I am the actual author of this section of the wiki...

Quote:Be Polite!

* We seem to be famous as being one of the friendliest and polite user-supported, non-profit, tech forums on the net.
- Our moderators won’t tolerate messages that don’t maintain our respectful, polite questions, answers and mindless banter…
- If there’s another forum that’s nicer, become a member there and start a flame war, please! It’s easy: say something about apples and oranges. It’ll get off topic in three posts flat…
+ Just kidding :-)

I believe that this is a joke, and reads as a joke and lightens up a dull read ( I KNOW it's a novel)

Reading through this mess one more time, I still don't believe I need to make a specific apology. It was certainly perceived that the original poster was 'adversarial'. But as Fatman_do pointed out, it seems things got sorted elsewhere.

For some reason I am the target of a backlash, of my backlash. Oh well. If I could please everyone all the time, I would have bought GB-PVR by now...

Anyone knowing me from my (many) posts, might know that this thread is actually not typical of me nor the forum. The very fact that this thread turned the way it did, is something I'm sorry for.

However, to those that appreciate what I do do, let's just say that a timid poke and runaway troll isn't going to get me down. Though, s/he won't be getting me riled either.

Thanks for support. Let's move on.

Frank, although Mopamartin and I seem to share a name, age, and even have similar careers I clearly don't share his opinion towards you. It doesn't take long for anyone new here to recognize that you are willing and eager to help newbies and techs alike, and are always looking to make the wiki better. You do accept (hopefully) my constructive criticism graciously and since I probably offer it more than anyone, that is a good thing.

I think this thread shows many examples (including my own) about the difficulties of using email and conferences for communication, it is an art not a science, and it is all to easy to take things out of context based on how you want to interpret. Thanks for your contributions.

I may have a solution for this issue soon. Wink I'll let you know more once I can firm up the details.

Great news. I started a Silicon Dust scraper and QAM.INI importer but was worried about disclaimer

They owe you so this shouldn't be a problem.
