What I discovered, at least in my unique case, is that the buffer will only be sized to the maximum reported resolution of the display

When you tell it to use 'auto', it just askes Windows what the current *desktop* resolution is, and uses that size.

Honestly though, I don't know if it's worth thinking about this thread any more. I don't remember anybody else reporting problems over all these years, and it sounds like you've got your problem sorted.

I agree, it is a good topic and something a lot of users might not consider. There are a surprising number of XBMC Android players that advertise they do 1080p when all they output is upscaled 720p and it is could to be informed and to know what to look for.
