Thanks Martin, I shall give that a go.

So I guess there is some technical reason it doesn't play reliably as a recording? From face value it sounds easy that it should, but I bet there's some coding gotcha in trying to support playing mp4's as recordings.

Basically there is a stack of different file formats out there (.ts/.avi/.mp4/.mkv/etc), and each would need a lot of work developing special client/server logic. I decided to just focus on the file format NextPVR records in (ie, .ts). NextPVR doesn't include any transcoding capability, because I recommend users leave their files as .ts files.

These other file formats, like .mp4, NextPVR doesn't normally play much of a role in playback of these file formats, and instead it just lets Windows choose what directshow filters to use when playing that file type. Those directshow filters usually only expect a file, and don't provide any easy way to feed data in from somewhere else (like a NextPVR server across the network).

Thanks for the explanation sub, Just as I thought, the reason for not supporting non .ts files is easy, a solution would be extremely difficult....
