Fred,

Can you clarify on this? no (other) MVP services. Is that including hauppage MVP services even if I disable or set to manual. How about GBPVR services?

Thanks.

Dan L.

The short answer:
You can have whatever MVPserver software installed but it must not be started. (services disabled or manual, not started will be fine)

The long answer:
OK, it all comes down to the port 16881 that MVP uses in its search for avilable servers. If that port is occupied on the listening server by GBPVR, the original Hauppauge software or any other software compatible with the MVP then MVP WOL service cannot be started.

If any MVPserver software is installed but not started, that's OK.
If any MVPserver is started after MVPWOL service is started I doubt that MVPserver will work properly.

I really can't see the point in having MVPsoftware installed on the same server as MVPWOL is installed. If the MVP server is up and running what's the point in waking a second one up?

Is there a way (with hauppauge dongle) to switch between running MVPservers with just the remote?

/Fred

Just a post to let everyone know that Fred250's program worked PERFECTLY as "advertised" for me. I have a Small Business Server running 24/7 in the garage so I loaded his utility here at the console and its worked bang on every since. I haven't tried the Service version but I quite like the fact on the commandline tool I can see status messages about when it's sent the WOL packets which is nice.

Thanks for a great tool Fred - not for everyone but for any of us geeks with mutliple pc's in the house its fantastic!!

Thanks, glad you liked it,
If you move to the server version you will still see in the windows application log when WOL packets are being sent, and you wouldn't have to make the trip to the garage whenever your SBS is restarted.

Doesn't everyone have their closets full of old computers with low energy consumption that can do some minor server dutys like waking HTPCs?
I use an old laptop for server, it's very good regarding energy consumption (about 15 watts).

I've got a Video Genie & a Dragon 64 ... does that count Big Grin

Out of intrest could the WOL function be added to the next dongle that sub does so its the MVP that sends the command ?

The dongles used by the majority of users are written by Hauppauge, so I have no way to add WOL to these.

I can add it to gbmvp.bin, but very few users are using that dongle.

Terran

Its not as simple as banging in WOL - the point of the MVP is it broadcasts looking for a server to connect to - so if it doesn't know who its going to connect to how does it know who to send the WOL packet to. So this requires a rethink from the way Hauppauge do it - they would either have to have the MVP remember its last server MAC address and send the WOL packet to this or have an option you can manually enter a MAC address to wake.

The server it last talked to is stored in the flash memory on the MVP.

As above... or with a new dongle you could add it in by MAC code if it was catered for ?

As I've said earlier in this thread, I do intend to add it to gbmvp.bin. I'll use the last server you connected to for the MAC address.

Hi Sub,

Sounds great, I'd love that.
Anytime soon?

A little bit off topic but anyway:
Sub, I've seen you recommend people not to use the gbmvp.bin dongle, why?
Where is it glitching or what is it lacking. I personally (for now) use the dongle.bin that came with 97.13, would you recommend to use an other?
To me (for higher WAF) it's important that FF/RW and skipping works well.

Thank you for GB-PVR, it's the best!
And thanks for all the effort and time you put into this project.
I don't know where you find the time but I'm so greatful that you do.

/fred
