May sound daft, but it may be worth changing the physical orientation of the disk when you try to read it... eg balance it on its edge or try it upside down. Edge on certainly helps with some types of bearing problems.

Yeah. You can hear things change as you change the orientation.

I haven't had much luck since that one day, when the files appeared for a short time... Now, the computer takes forever to start with the drive in...

If so I'd suggest putting into a different system as a supplimental drive and change it's spinup time to much longer.

No, it was a second drive, though it used to have the temp folder and the swap drive on it. And so I have made it the third drive now and Windows leaves it alone on startup...

But what do you mean spinup time? I haven't seen that setting in the bios for ages...

I have to call it. Time to move on...

The drive won't even poll in the BIOS anymore. And now the drive stops spinning after a few minutes. I'll be shipping it off and getting it replaced. I know that Seagate won't even want to try and get the data off the drive. That would be a promise that they wouldn't want to live up too.

I remember few years back that I sent a drive off to a Data Recovery place. They seemed pretty reputable. But they just said that there was nothing they could do...

Damn... And just when I was gearing up for the next release of GB-PVR...

Oh well.. I wanted to thank all for their support and thoughts and suggestions and smiles...

I'm moving to Australia in a couple of months. Maybe a new PAL friendly version of ZProcess would be nice...

To be on the more proactive side, you might want to consider a service such as mozy.com. First two gb are free, or unlimited backup for one computer for $4.95/month. I have their pay service on my primary machine, and their free service on my htpc and it has saved me more than once.

Local backups are good, but you have to remember to do them. With Mozy, you just install, config and forget.

you can start with adding something like

xcopy \directorypath\*.* g:\ /s /c /y /h /i /x /D:mmddyy (assuming g:\ is a USB stick) and mmddyy is the date of your previous backup.

You can add it to your GB-PVR batchfile that grabs your EPG data daily.

backing up to another hard drive on the same computer is also an option.

Hind sight is always 20/20, but then it is never to late to install a good version control system or use one of the many free sites to maintain your code.

Local options are:

If you are planning to make the source available then I haven't ever had a problem with Sourceforge.

Another option is https://freepository.com/

With Subversion and CVS you could easily store the repository on the local hard drive or have it stored on a USB stick. The other remote hosting allow for remote management and restoration of the code.

Just something to think about for the future. I believe there are even visual stuidio plugins for Subversion and CVS. Regardless there are several external clients that can be used.

Nice thing about Subversion is the ability to setup a windows service on another machine to host the data store.

I do all my development on one machine and keep my Subversion data on another machine and checkout/checkin via the http interface.

I also backup that information to a different drive nightly.

There is a must have windows shell plugin for Subversion that puts all your commands right in the right context menu called TortoiseSVN.

As you may have read from other posts, I've given up trying to get the data back. And it has totally knocked the wind out of me.

I do know that I will be setting something up that is very, very, very, VERY automatic. It's a sad thing, but I'm determined to get over it.

But with my immediate international move, a break from programming might be a good thing...
