Just wanted to add a comment, I'm running an ATI-3450-HD PCI-E card on windows XP SP3 and have done a lot of resarc on various codecs and renders, and I'm still not 100% sure if I have HW acceleretion activated :o. What I HAVE found is this:

Installing Directx10 and switching to EVR reduced the cpu load about 10% when playing back video, load varied from about 18% for .mpg to about 35% for .xvid prior to DX10, and all dropped about 10%. (DX10 for XP can be downloaded from http://www.techmixer.com/install-directx...pre-fix-3/ )

The lowest cpu load I'v found is with the Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder for mpeg and xvid and the Core AVC decoder for H264. And setting all ccc settings to "best quality" got rid of the tearing problem. All tests have been done with sd, as I don't have a hd-capable display yet.

Using EVR on XP = no DXVA at all. Must be VMR9. If DXVA is on, your CPU usage should be 10% max (FullHD).
Core AVC is not DXVA compatible at all, but it is good for h.264 TV.

Basic rule for DXVA:
XP must be VMR9
VISTA must be EVR

BTW: This DX10 do not help you anyhow. EVR is to XP delivered by Frameworks 3.x and under XP is software only.

Are you sure about that? Sevral web-pages claims that games run up to 300% faster with DX10 on XP? VMR9 gives me smoot and good playback but noticable more cpu-load than EVR, and that does not make sense...

What Codecs (H264, divx, xvid and mpeg) ARE DXVA compatible?

Only few games are able to use DX10 under XP.

You can use DXVA for h.264,VC-1 and MPEG2.

Do you have h.264 LiveTV or MPEG2?

But if SOME games can use DX10 under XP they must be able to use HW-acceleration, else they would not archieve that increase in performance...

Digital SD-tv is mpeg2 at my site, the HD channels are H264 but I haven't been able to watch them on a standard TV-set (should that be possible?) and my lcd-monitor is only 1024x768 (I'm in the process of building a RPTV based on a full HD lcd).

Yes, but you are speaking about games wich have absolutly nothing to do with DXVA.

If you are on SD, then you can give SAF a chance http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=40821

Are you using ICQ? I can tell you more, but it is better on "online" chat.
