cool, finally figured out how to hide sleep/shutdown/restart buttons on start menu in vista/7!
[basically figured out how to apply GPO policy without restart]
i have a hdpvr on the way, then i'll be moving to win7 and npvr and fixing this for npvr...Smile
man, dealing with power is quite the pain..at least win7 gives you more tools and info..[try looking up current wake times in xp...not easy]
so probably a month or so...

oooOOooo, i found out there's a policy/reg setting to enable programs to prevent suspend/sleep!!!! Big Grin
so basically the same behavior as xp i hope...[cancel suspend] or maybe just make suspend like shutdowns, show that screen with reasons why...and have user choose or just sit there..
will be testing this out as that would make it same for xp as vista/7...Smile
also found the re-sleep idle timeout setting for when windows wakes to record without user intervention[not same as user idle timeout]..and the delay to allow programs before suspend...

tho for our purposes, probably only need the ability to remove user suspend/shutdown/restart...and that's just one setting...
and the machine front power button and sleep buttons...no problem...Big Grin

Hi pBS. It seems that some of this season's programs run at about the time I switch off (hibernate) the computer and over the last couple of weeks I have cut short some of my wife's viewing! So I'm wondering ....... have you had any progress on this?

well those reg entries/policies didn't seem to do anything...
but there is away mode..Big Grin
away mode is like half-sleep mode, where it looks to be off but still recording, and when done, it goes ahead and continues suspend..
does the trick and even looks to be off...even works with sleep key and menu item..

since nPvr is best on win7/vista, i'll only be supporting it in new version...
got the db stuff sorted, tho still have to test recording detection, but i know the bits needed...
was trying to lobby for inclusion in main app without luck, but not hard to do separately really....

i have cmd line version already, but not sure any scripts can launch it reliably..[and couldn't pre-enable by putting in parallelprocessing.bat, giving like 5 min grace period for starts]
i'll try to have a configurable pre-deny, so it'll deny suspend if recording starts within next X mins..
but cmdline ver should work fine for things already recording as you try to sleep it..Smile
have to clean it up and and a bit of help info and i'll post it then...
it won't deny shutdowns or restarts tho...it'll take me a while to integrate it into that program..[abortshut]

here's my little awaymode command line app..Smile
run it when you want awaymode enabled [while you need to keep machine awake]
run it again to clear awaymode and allow sleep/hibernate..
[or any cmdline param will force it off]

while awaymode is active, trying to sleep machine will result in a low power state, just screen turns off and machine continues to work...
when awaymode is disabled while in awaymode [screen blank], it'll go ahead and sleep...

if you hit a key while in awaymode, it'll wake up and function as normal..

to try it out, run it, then wait a few secs and hit sleep key or sleep from start menu..
to wake it fully back up, just hit a key...
to turn awaymode off, off just run it again..
then try hitting sleep key...it'll suspend..

to use:
place it in parallelprocessing.bat at beginning, using start cmd...
like: 'start AwayModeActive.exe'
and again at end of postprocessing.bat to turn it off after recording/comskip...
like: 'start AwayModeActive.exe off'

That was quick, thanks. I'll play with it later in the day (though I'm working in my 'home office' today I'll try to use self control and wait till tonight).

Cheers

OK pBS, it works thanks, but only in part. First, it does not prevent hibernation but it does prevent Sleep, which I can live with even though my flashing large illuminated power switch is annoying in Sleep mode. Secondly, as the command toggles, a second recording starting before a previous one is finished toggles the status so that Sleep can be activated while both recordings are happening.
Also. stopping a recording doesn't appear to trigger the PostProcessing batch file. But tomorrow I'll hopefully have time to play further.

oops, forgot to check hibernating..tho it shold work there also..
yea, part of that problem is the processing batches...they don't 'always' run...so not the best way to invoke them..
i'll build in logic and cmdline opts for on and off and make them forced...so starting another rec won't ever kill other's protection..
check back later for an updated one..
i'll see what iu can do about hibernating...tho sleep eventually hibernates...Smile [if hybrid mode is on.]
