The app does lots of special things with the MPEG2 Demultiplexer to allow for features like live tv and play back of in progress recordings etc, as well using NPVR TS Reader filter (which wouldnt used when using LAV splitter) for handling subtitles and audio stream switching etc. You lose the ability to do this stuff with other splitters.

By renaming the file you also will lose the Timing.Info file which is a key feature for seeking accurately with broadcast transport streams.
