whurlston,
Thanks, tried that and a message comes up that I have to reboot the computer for the
changes to take effect. What would be very useful is a little program that would put
the part into any of the 3 modes per pBS post #14 above, without having to reboot
or anything.

The name is USB ATSC Device
The Device Instance Id is USB\VID_1B80&PID_A340\5&277DDB86&0&4
There are 21 driver files listed supplied by eMPIA Technology, Inc
file version: 5.7.1107.0

There ought to be something in one of those files that can be talked to, if there is any
documentation. I'll do some more digging.

That usually means some software is accessing the device at the time that you disable it. If you can find out what that software is and kill it it should work withought rebooting. I'm guessing that the bundled Arcsoft software is TotalMedia 3.5. If it is, try exiting the TM Monitor app or kill TMMonitor.exe in the task manager.

I missed that post. Can someone export that reg key and zip and post it for me?

to whom it may concern, PLEASE NOTE EDIT BELOW

Last night when doing a scan of the local comcast cable there were a few entries that had weird 4 digit only channel numbers, like 4059, 4060, 4089, and 3099. I think these
numbers come about in error because the actual major and minor channel numbers are only 10 bits long and are packed, so some times if they are grabbed as words there are
some non zero values in the upper 6 bits. If you take 4059 as an example convert it to
hex save only the lower 10 bits and convert back to decimal you get 987 which is the
correct sub channel number. See URL
http://www.etherguidesystems.com/Help/SD.../CVCT.aspx

Even though the date on that web page is 2007 I think the table might be outdated
because there seems to be additional data in the table now that makes room for the
OTA major and minor number as well as the actual cable major and minor number. That
might be why the P: value mostly matches the sub channel number. ??? Does anyone
know more about this?

NOTE: since this was posted I learned using TSReader that comcast at least seem to be using different version
tables than in the URL above, because I found a channel which would end up with two subchannels = 3 if
only 10 bits are used. Does anyone know where the format for all the various tables are documented?
Thanks

Sorry, sometimes I do stupid things

I was still using the program when I tried to turn off and on the driver, and you are right
TMMoniter is running also. I'll try it later because I have all kinds of stuff open and I normally just put the computer in standby and don't reboot very often. Any way I want
to be able to switch back and forth within GBPVR between OTA and cable modes. I can just use a backwards splitter between cable and antenna, then I have the best of both
worlds!

Thanks

I tried your suggestion again and it does what you said. What ever the registry is set to, disabling and reenabling returns it to that value. TMMonitor can be running in background without affecting this.

I don't know much about the registry but I searched for ATSCMode and found it in 6 places all in HKey_Local_Machine\System\
1. \controlset001\control\class{..}0024\settings\OEMsettings\ATSCMode
2. 0026\
3. \controlset003\ 0024\
4. 0026\
5. \currentcontrolset 0024\
6. 0026\

I left out duplicate information. I changed the first 4 from 0 to 2 and the current
controlset had already changed to be 2. I don't know which ones I should have changed. But that arrangement helps me because TotalMedia remembers the last
mode it was in, and I use cable with EasyHDTV and GBPVR. So enabling and disabling
puts it in cable mode, even if TotalMedia left it in antenna mode. Now unplugging and
replugging puts it into cable mode.

I tried mode 1 QAM64 and did a scan, it found nothing on the cable. Some time I'll do some searching on the air waves.

Some people have reported being able to listen to audio music channels on the cable,
with QAM tuners and it looks like cable channel 76 here with 50 subchannels might
be music. Does anyone know how to decode or enable it?

CurrentControlSet is simply a duplicate of one of the other ControlSet entries. It is the duplicate of the current one that is active and changes depending on which user/device profile is in use. Changing the CurrentControlSet will change the ControlSet to which it is mapped and vice versa which is why you saw the change had taken effect in CurrentControlSet after changing all the others.

I was going to write an app to change the value, disable and re-enable the device but you have found it's not necessary. Most QAM channel will be QAM256.

Try http://www.silicondust.com/wiki/hdhomerun/channels
Enter your zip code and it should tell you the channels available as well as the modulation type.

Thanks for the channels URL. There are many more channels there than I can get. I guess they are including the incripted ones.

Your are right, I don't need qam64, but I still don't have an easy way to go back and forth between 8-VSB and QAM256. Not all the OTA channels are handled by cable. They just handle the main channel primarily. There are 9 channels OTA that I don't get on cable.

I was studying Post #19 above and looked at my logs and they are behaving similarly, with the error message, but mine go on because the data is there because it is already in QAM256 mode. It looks like it is pollible that Kworld provided a different way to do it.
They call it ATSCMode. If the registery can change it we ought to be able to!! Where
are the BDA calling conventions listed?

Do an export on the CurrentControlSet OEM Settings key and zip and post it. I can create an app that will switch it and restart the device.

BDA Reference: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/...S.85).aspx

QAM stuff is beyond the reference though since it is not in it.

pBS, I owe you a virtual Christmas card. On a whim, I decided to see if there was a similar ATSCMode reg entry for the Pinnacle PCTV HD Stick and I found that it doesn't have a similar one, it has the exact same entry. Changing it to "2" has enabled QAM in GBPVR which I had been previously unable to do.
