Hi stattic.

I have uploaded a small clip to Eriks server.
PAL, MJPEG Tv-capture (software based TV-card Medion Saa7134).
I hope that you can make a profile for mencoder, that will compress this clip nicely. I did not hame much succes, therefore, I changed your script to use virtusldub instead. But if you find some good settings - I will try to use your script again.

Let me hear how it turns out

Steen,

I had a go at your file. I got good compression and the picture looked good however I ran into AV synch issues. In the process of troubleshooting the AV synch issues, I accidentally deleted the original file. ugh! Three days ago someone submitted a bug report concerning MJPEG videos. Hopefully this will address the crashes you had. If you want I can send you one of the samples I created. It's 3 MB.

Stattic

Thanks for your effort. I also had A-V problems using mencoder, but also during the transcoding, there was a lot of "skipped frames" so the motion was jerky when I watched it after recoding.

I can see that my file still is present at Eriks ftp server, so you might get it again, if you think that it is possible to encode these kind of captures using mencoder.

Using virtualdub, I don't have any A-V problems, and no dropped frames. I don't know which settings I need to change in mencoder - to achive better results.

I got the file again from Erik's ftp. There's a few more things I'd like to try out to solve the AV synch issue. The transcode I did wasn't jerky. I'll update you if I find anything else.

Before i do any testing does anyone know of any issues that cause .avi's (this time created using cartoon profile) to crash GBPVR or windows media player when run?

perhaps i might get a shortcut to see where to look for problems!

As far as PSP goes, I think I read it uses a non-standard header for it's MPEG4 files. Mencoder has experimental x264 (aka MPEG-4 AVC, aka AVC) support, so PSP support could happen. I have not tried it yet as I use ffmpeg for my PSP transcodes currently.

Thanks for the work on all this Stattik. I have yet to have AVI files, but the more I record and want to store my DVDs for MVP playback, the more I want to use AVIs to take up less room.. This will make it easier, and your use of dirmon is exactly what I was going to do.. now I don't have to do any of the hard work, you've done it and in a most excellent way! THANKS!

From what I read mencoder doesn't have very robust mp4 container support. I would have to create raw streams and mux them in another app like mp4box. It also seems that another app called atomchanger is needed to ge the files to play on the PSP.

I've been looking into creating a profile for the MVP. I was thinking it would be good for HD files.

I did some searching, it appears you can use mencoder for the PSP, but then you need to either use ffmpeg or some other tool (mp4ip?) to fix the container info. Still looking more into it...
