Hi Sub,

sub Wrote:You need to determine if this is a playback or recording thing. Ideally try playing the file in a non-directshow based player like mplayer.exe or VLC. If these players also have problems playing the file, then this points at either the mux or the card itself being the cause of the problem.
I believe this is a recording thing as (a) when I play back problem recordings in media player they indicate a problem in recording [jerky / stops several minutes in] and (b) previously recording I made before swapping PCs play back fine.

sub Wrote:That may just be something funny happening with the tray app. From the look of the recording service logs, all the recordings started were stopped. When this happens, check if the recording file is still growing.
The file did stop growing in size. Seems like the recording itself stopped but GB-PVR didn't notice it.

sub Wrote:Also can you try viewing live tv, or scheduling another recording to see if the tuner is really in use?
In live TV mode the video is jerky too, also pointing to the card or mux I think.

What do you think?

Tks
Greg

Yeah, its really sounding like your capture doesnt like something about your new PC, but you should try playing the file in a non Directshow player like mplayer or vlc to be sure. Windows Media Player is not ideal for testing this, since its directshow based the same as GB-PVR.

As I indicated above, in your logs it looks all the recordings seem to have been stopped normally, and this is done by GB-PVR so its definitely aware of it. Its worth trying to do something with that tuner when this next happens.

ie, in the GBPVRRecordingService.exe-native.log you'll see the recording start with a message like:

21:25:00.328 INFO BDARecorder:::StartRecording(...)

and be stopped sometime later with:

22:02:51.156 VERBOSE BDARecorder::StopRecording()

What did you mean by this? Wasn't exactly sure what to try and what you were aiming to test/confirm?

To be honest, I dont really know. We dont have DVB-T, so I dont have first hand experience with it myself.

You though the recording was still occurring, so I wanted to check whether GB-PVR thought that was the case. For example, click the live tv button - if the tuner was still in use GB-PVR will tell you that, otherwise it'll start live tv.

Just setup a recording during the day. When I come home:
 1. GB-PVR tray and UI says its still recording
 2. file size is not growing however
 3. clicking on the LiveTV you get a "can't watch as you are recording", however there was no option to watch the currenly recorded show that is being recorded (which is an option normally offered from memory)
 4. only way to stop GB-PVR thinking it is still recording is to restart the recording session

Does this info help Sub?

It does answer my question, but unfortunately doesnt really help me get any closer to knowing what your problem is. Sorry.

Sub - Thanks for your help. Some interesting findings here:

* I tried recording directly from tuner card to disk using the Twinhan site's Capture Tool2. The recording and playback (created a *.ts file) works fine.

* I then tried configuring GB-PVR to "Microsoft DVR-MS" for the BDAMux setting. This actually seems to have fixed the problem, although I get a *.dvr-ms file instead of a *.mpg file.

Q1 - Is there any reasons to not just leave GB-PVR set to this setting? Was there a constraint to using this *.dvr-ms format?

Q2 - Re the "cyberlink" setting that wasn't working, is there a way to tell/confirm which of the installed cyberlink mux's that GB-PVR uses if it is configured to Cyberlink? That is noting the output of the mux checking tool had the following?
Found: PP MPEG Muxer (aka, CyberLink MPEG Muxer)
FILE: C:\Program Files\CyberLink DVD Solution\PowerProducer\ppMpgMux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.1228

Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\Gregs\bin\mux\2\THMpgMux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.2022
Thanks again
Greg

For just recording/viewing it'll be fine. It is the best behaved of the mux filters. It can be a bit of hassle if you're using an MVP, or recording to DVD, but you can use the 'transcode' option in the Video Library to convert the file from dvr-ms to mpg.

I'm glad you're having some success. I know how frustrating this stuff can be. (in my own defense, I did mention the mux potentially being the problem)

It'll always use the first one listed.
