I think I figured it out. I had two old floor speakers, about 3.5' tall each, sitting behind the entertainment center, pretty close to the back of the tube. Another DUH moment for me. They haven't even been hooked up since I got my new surround sound system. (5.1) I took them out when getting my cable/phone service updated... haven't noticed the blotches recently.

I'll be ok... they have medicine for this, right?

Right now I have a 37" Panasonic with purple and green blotches. I could get it fixed, or I could use it as an excuse to upgrade. But first a need a 'slightly' larger entertainment center.

Weird, my 27" CRT Panasonic has the same problem. It's around 6 years old... But I don't have any magnetic things around it.

Anything with a power supply in it counts as a magnetic source as well as nearby speakers, kids toys etc.

The closest thing with a power supply is 3+ feet away. And it never bothered it before, just been in the last few months.

When your shadow mask gets really magnetized (big splotches) often you have to manually degauss it. Not sure why yours is magnetized but it sure sounds like it. Many TV shops will degauss pretty cheaply, you might call one and check. You can also buy a coil off of ebay for $30 or so.

It's also possible that the circuit that turns on your degaussing coil in your tv is not working.

The easiest way to correct the problem is to cancel the magnetic force that is affecting it. The can easily be accomplished by shaking the TV vigorously in an east to west fashion. This will cause the electrons on the screen to align east to west, canceling the normal south to north alignment, therefore causing the blotches to disappear. Of course, the blotches will only be negated while the TV is being shaken.

If it's against/near an interior wall, could there be something magnetic on the other side of the wall? Maybe some big speakers in the bedroom or an electro-magnet in the garage or something? Also, I know our kids have these new "magnetix" thingys (whatever happened to tinkertoys?) - I could see something like that getting lost by/in/under the TV.

Nice price and a good name. I was very tempted by the DLP sets because of price. After looking at lcd and plasma panels in the stores the DLP sets looked dark and gloomy to me. The corners of the bigger screens especially had problems. My living room is very sunny all day and the girlfriend would never agree to heavy curtains screwing up the view to make the tv watchable.

I have a 65732...not sure how it's different. It's a great set. Lots of inputs and looks very nice. I'd rate it at five stars. Only thing I don't like about it is that it's not a 73"...

Also, it's a projection TV so it's a lot 'thicker' than an LCD or plasma...no way you can hang it on the wall. Not really very heavy, just bulky.

I'm a bit surprised by bdgbill's comment about the brightness...I've found DLP's to be brighter and sharper than the others. We have no problems with it in our great room that's usually pretty bright. Plus, no risk of burn-in with DLP and besides, it's kind of an interesting technology. Very nice for playing Wii games on, too...

I don't know if I'd mail-order one, tho. They're pretty big & it'd be a real hassle if something went wrong...might want to check around locally and see what you can find.
