I think being computer savvy is the problem. To give you an idea, on a brand new XP/Vista/Win 7 machine, I can download and install GBPVR completely from NMTInstall in about 5 minutes selecting only defaults, the only thought is entering a MAC address. If I had chosen to install mvpmcx2 to a USB drive, I could take that drive and put in in my NMT and with about 4 remote clicks I can see the GBPVR interface on the NMT. In total that is going to be about 20 mouse/keystroke/remote clicks.

The hard part after that is configuration of GBPVR but that has nothing to do with the NMT.

mvallevand Wrote:Personally I think the best solution is not to archive right away, that way you get the maximum value from mvpmcx2 and GBPVR. After 30 days transcode them to h264 and to mkv if you are short of space. Many DVB and HD-PVR users already get h264 compression so converting to mkv doesn't buy a lot.

Martin

What would you suggest for an h264 encoder?

FairUse Wizard works OK for DVD based things, you just have to use mkvmerge when you're done.

To convert odd things I record (I like odd programs like History Detectives on PBS, History's Lost & Found on History Channel, etc. and they aren't commonly available anywhere else so they have to be encoded from GBPVR recordings) I use WinFF to make Xvids from the GBPVR mpegs. I've tried Handbrake, AutoGK, etc. but they always seem to have more artifacts and stutters than if I use WinFF. I'm thinking I may want to turn my recording quality up to give the encoders more to work with and try others again though.

I hve noticed the difference between Xvid and x264 encodes when using FairUse Wizard though, so I would like to move my odd stuff over to x/h264 too.

Thanks,

Steve

Sorry slr_65 I don't archive, I watch and toss. WinFF is really a front end to ffmpeg so I can't see it doing a better job then AutoGK and xvid or Handbrake and h264. AutoGK has certainly proven to be fine for SD up to DVD though and well supported on most hardware players if you aren't fancy with qpel and warp points.

I also don't believe in being stingy with disk space trying to save 100MB here or there.

Hi Martin,

We like to re-watch a lot of stuff so we tend to keep most things.

I'm sure the WinFF vs AutoGK/Handbrake is just a settings issue. I just haven't had time to sit down and figure it all out and WinFF just works "out of the box" -> it simply gave the very best output. One place the difference is quite noticable is with credits that scroll at the end of shows. When I get time this winter I'll dig into it a bit deeper as it seems the AGK and Handbrake work very well for most others so I'm curious as to why they don't work so well for me.

100 megs here and there add up! Actually it's usually much more for me - mpegs of hour shows usually end up over a gigabyte and avis of the same shows are commonly seen at around 350meg so the savings is pretty significant . . . though big drives are getting cheap these days!

I was doing some cleaning in the storage room the other day and ran across a 10gig drive and I actually hesitated before I threw it out, then I thought "what would I ever need that small of a drive for?"! Of course now that I tossed it I realize that it was an ide drive and they are getting hard to find and it would've worked perfect in the refurb pch I just ordered for my Mom to use! Oh well, I'll just use a thumbdrive on hers.

Well, off to download the newest GBPVR release!

Thanks for everything (especially that automated NMT installer! I used that the other night and had my pch up and going in no time!). Take Care,

Steve

My refurb A-100 arrived today, and just installed a new release of GBPVR! I think this is an accurate picture right now. Big Grin Hopefully it still looks like that tomorrow. Rolleyes

Edit: And it does. I have NMT working with new GBPVR 1.4.7, thanks to NMTInstaller and all the info here. I am com skipping, using my same remote, and enjoying a better picture on my old CRT from QAM recordings. Still just tweaking the menu size to the screen, and figuring out the best startup method to present to the family.

Outstanding development and support by Martin, sub and everyone involved.

Anyone want to buy an MVP or 2, cheap?

Cheers!

Hehehe I never saw you follow up edit until just now, I agree with you completely but I am holding onto one of my MVP's as it is only for playing music & kid's programs for the parrots & an old MVP does the job fine Rolleyes

I am calling all NMT users again trying to find out what different makes/models we have running GB-PVR/mvpmcx2 out there?? I am about to update the intro for the NMT on the wiki & want to be accurate with what I write.

I know that we have "Popcorn Hour 100 Series - A-100 & A-110" I haven't seen any mention of anyone running the B-110?

"EGreat M34a" anyone confirm the other models are working OK?

I have also seen mention of another Sigma 8635 based NMT but don't know the make or model??

the b110 is no longer being sold... and it was only for the really crazy people who wanted to build themselves a mini-ITX system. but i would guess that it works just like everything else :-p

the c200 i would be interested in seeing.

The C-200 doesn't support mvpmcx2 but I agree with Hi-Jack's comments in this post http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21502
"PopCorn hour C-200 is the most interesting "available" player (HDI or YuiXX are not available) out there right now however is very buggy and immature at this stage" I think there is a GBPVR user (maybe trummel?) with a B210 the good thing about it for those with the ITX case and PSU already, is that there still are refurbs and I think it support DTS downmix.
