Personally, I'd prefer .ts files for compatibility with my other HD recorder (assuming it is a playable standard transport stream with PAT packets). From your comments, I'm guessing this is not the case, however.

Hauppauge may be looking at using the conversion to mpg for some sort of DRM for MCE PCs also. (just an uninformed guess)

The MainConcept decoder can be used by other applications. I installed the hcwSMD07.exe pack (using WinTV setup) and Windows Media Player 9 picked it up immediately and started using the Mainconcept decoder which enabled the PureVideo hardware on my 7600GS card. CPU dropped under 50% on a 1080i transport stream. Media Player Classic allowed me to add it as an external filter (HCW MPEG-2 Video Decoder) which also gave me access to many advanced settings. I don't know if it will install if there is no Hauppauge card present, however.

I'm not sure which comments you mean. I agree that .ts files are just fine (though I suggest GB-PVR users apply this patch: http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=1...ostcount=5, which fixes one problem that can occur with TS Mux option (broken PAT)).

These last few posts were really about Cahill84's quest to find a mux which would allow him to record his digital transmissions directly to a program stream .mpg file. The muxes that are readily available which do this unfortunately do not work so well with ATSC.

Sorry, I lost track of his goals here with wanting a Mux to acheive mpg files. We've been passing info on HVR1600 issues, Video Cards, HD playback, and I lost my place.

Yeah, when I record with the TS it "tears" (I think that's what it's called) It will go smothly for inconsistent amounts of time (10seconds-2 minutes) and then there will be a an unusual movement of the characters. It's almost as if it's dropping frames. I've heard people joke about it looking like claymation, but that's kind of what it looks like. The people will be moving along and then all of a sudden it will jump to an akward position. Typically it occurs when the camera is panning quickly and in extreme action scenes. Some shows are worse than others. So the mpeg mux would have solved two problems hopefully... 1)the ability to convert it to a divx avi 2) Hopefully smoother playback. Ironically the ATSC viewing is the only thing that I can get to work on the stupid wintv2000 program. I would never trade Gb-pvr for it though. I was just looking for the perfect solution... what can I say. :-) Anyway.. I saw that sub said something about a TS mux patch, maybe I'll try that.

I've been using gui4ffmpeg to convert HD .ts files to SD .mpg to make standard DVDs of HD shows. (select "All Files" option when loading a .ts file) It has an mp4 output option that is supposed to be "DIVX Compatible" as well as DVD, VCD, SVCD. I don't know if that would meet any of your requirements since I never convert to .avi, mpeg2 is just fine for me.

I didn't even install WinTV2k this time around, just the drivers and decoder.

...and to add to that, if you find settings that work well for you in gui4ffmpeg, then you'll be able to configure GB-PVR to use the same ffmpeg settings, which should give you the same results for the built in autoconversions.

I know that there are compressions that keep them in the same format, but it has lossless compression like losses wav compression or lossless tiff compression. Is there such a thing for mpegs? Meaning that I would be able to burn it to a disk and watch it on any dvd player, but that it would be smaller than the typical 2-3 hr = 1 dvd. Has anyone heard of this? The reason I ask is that I would consider that an alternative for these TS files. Ultimately then, I would record them, compress them to a reasonable amount, but not keep them on my hard drive for an extended amount of time. Basically HD->SD conversion, but with good mpeg compression.

I don't know if that patch actually heped the TS records, they still are having problems playing back smoothly. Would the decoder help with this? Can you download the decoder by itself or could someone e-mail it to me?

I couldn't find a spot to put this question but I think it applies here. I don't know if its the HVR-1600 or the ATSC information, but I cannot convert these files. The mpeg files always get stuck around 30,000k. What's weird about it is that Task manager says that GBPVRConvert.exe is eating all the cpu, but no file. I have left it for hours on end... no results. Has anyone else been able to convert these files with this card? I don't mind using DVR-M$ vs TS, but I cannot get it to transcode to even an mpg2 file. Help....

This would typically relate to the TS splitter or source filter that you're using, or possible the decoder.

This is what happens when the Cyberlink mux (used by GBPVRConverter.exe) shits itself. GBPVRConvert.exe is used when converting .dvr-ms files to .mpg.

I'm assuming that's the technical term for it. :-) What's the best way to fix that problem? I followed another forum thread to download what was supposedly the best Cyberlink Mux. I dunno.
