Recording Hockey

Are there any tips for improving the recording of hockey games?

I have a PVR150 and am using the most recent beta drivers, no tweaks, and high quality.

The problem is the movement is kind of blurred. I think it has something to do with the white ice because I also noticed the same slight blur when recording curling.

I would strongly recommend using the (free) DScaler5 codec.

Very smooth playback for things like sports. Some faint "ghosting" around the blue/red lines when the camera is panning, but definitely the best I've found so far.

Hey I just posted in my thread "decoder / filter graph trouble" about this, I remember trying to get dscaler working on my previous install but somehow couldnt select it as a filter, could you possibly post some brief install and setup instructions?

I use the cyberlink decoders on Overlay and timeshifted. I can't tell the difference between this and TV. No other decoder works as well for me including Nero, Dscaler, Open GL (??), Intervideo, ATi decoders. Go Sens Go!!!

If you are in Canada, then ROBTV is the best channel to test. They have a news ticker that scrolls really fast and only the cyberlink decoders can handle it. Tickers for CNBC, CNN and CTV newsnet just aren't fast enough.

Well Im limited to VMR because my vid card (Geforce FX 5700) wont let me select overlay on the second monitor with dual display.

I really dont care about cpu or processor usage at this point, I just want something crisp while in motion. So anyone with VMR set-up and having good fast motion let me know.

my specs are p4 3.2HT, 1g ram, geforce fx 5700, 350gb drive dedicated to gbpvr, hauppauge pvr 150. Im using s-video from STB and s-video back to tv.

I use the nVidia decoder with an FX5200 and the overlay mode is the only way I got [ice] hockey to look good. Too bad you can't use overlay in your setup.

This could be a problem with the encoding as well as the decoding. Try downloading the Hauppauge tweak tool and lowering the temporal filter setting to 4.

Thanks for the tips. I downloaded the tweak tool and it helped a bit.

DScaler5 was great when the camera wasn't moving, but horrible if the camera moves.

So I'm still using Intervideo but will continue to experiment. I guess cyberlink will be my next try.

I set the recording bitrate to 5000 and it really improved hockey and auto racing. You'll use about 2.7GB/hour but a very clear picture.
