Hi, quick question. I've heard (read) that recording High Definition content through my HiDef digital cable box is not possible. BUT, a buddy of mine was saying that he heard that you can use the DVI out on the cable box to go to your capture card to record content in Hi Def.

Can someone disprove this or point me to a thread where it describes this type of setup? Thanks.

I can't point to a specific example but I don't see why that wouldn't work.

You'd have to have a capture card with DVI inputs, or with component inputs or whatever your cable box outputs. I don't know if such a card exists or if it would be affordable. You'd also have to have an IR blaster that could control your cable box so GB-PVR could change channels.

Also, GB-PVR would have to be able to use the DVI (or whatever) inputs on the card. I don't think it can at this point. Perhaps other PVR systems do, I don't know. That would something nice for GB-PVR to implement.

At any rate, it certainly seems possible.

There are no consumer devices with DVI inputs for video capture.

Yep, that sure seems to be the case. After I posted, I did a bit more research. This thread on the AVS forum addresses it pretty well...

I guess it would be possible if you were willing to spend $20K+ but that's a bit out of my budget... Big Grin

Oh well....

tipstir Wrote:I don't have HD Digital Cable, well I just can hear the sound on the channels but for those in the family that has it I've recommend using this for now. Because at least you can record with S-Video back to the PVR-150 an etc. using HiPro S-Video cable.

Pick this up at your local Radio Shack or those in Europe Tandy StoreSmile

What would be the point? Not only are you converting a digital signal to analog but you are seriously impacting image quality. Totally not worth it. You'd be better off waiting for cable cards to be released. You could also try searching for atlantis...

Since I don't live in the states, I actually have no clue what the case is, but in theory you could have HD channels that are not available as SD channels...
