The Hauppauge website now lists a price for the wireless MVP ($149.00), so I guess it's no longer vaporware. Will the 802.11G data standard provide sufficient bandwidth for SD TV?
Thanks

I am currently running two wired MVPs and one wireless (via a wireless bridge) as referred to in this thread. It works great, but I had to sacrifice network security in order to get it to work smoothly. I am far from a networking guru, but what I found is security encryption slowed the connection down to the point that video was unwatchable. What I ended up doing was enabling MAC filtering and hiding the broadcast ID, but it is still unsecure. Also, there is only enough speed for one device to communicate wirelessly as any given time. If I try to access the internet with my laptop via my wireless router, the MVP video gets choppy (not an issue with MP3 audio).
I think the way to go will be with the new Wireless-N standard that is emerging. Its speed, range, and MIMO should be able to handle multiple wireless MVPs without a hitch. I'm keeping my current setup as-is until an inexpensive wireless-N comes around. :p

Has anyone been successful with ZOOM game adapter 125Mbitps version?

Howdy,
When I first wanted to go wireless I tried to use my existing 802.11b network. Music played like a champ but video would be choppy and not usable. Upgrading to "G" resolved all issues and I have 2 MVP's on wireless now and both are solid even streaming live TV or playing a Divx file. I did have the first MVP on a Netgear Game Adapter and that worked fine. Recently I changed that to the new Buffalo Airstation Ethernet Converter (http://www.buffalotech.com/products/prod...egoryid=29) This device is better because it acts like a router for my network and I don't have to buy an adapter for each MVP or any other devices I want upstairs. I can plug up to 4 devices on it with no problem. I tested playing a video on 1 MVP and live TV with the other MVP and both were ok. I didn't dare do more than that tho lol.

I have a wireless mvp on order... should be here the middle of next week. I'll report on how well it works.
Matt
My Objective:
I am actually planning on buying my first MediaMVP, and while I will eventually look to have a wired set up, I will need to run things wirelessly for now. With that in mind, and this new release of the Wireless MediaMVP, I am trying to decide whether to go with that, or just a regular MediaMVP. Options: I found a non-wireless MediaMVP selling for about $81 with shipping at this link: http://www.securemart.com/cgi-bin/future...mv_stock=y. Since that the Wireless MediaMVP is being sold for $149, plus shipping costs which I will assume to be about $10, that would mean I should be able to purchase hardware to make the non-wireless MediaMVP function wirelessly for up to about $80 without it being a more expensive option (and perhaps less expensive if I can do it for less than $80?). I currently have a 2Wire wireless router that came with my DSL service that I use to network more than one computer connect them to the internet. Questions: 1. If I purchase a wireless game adapter (Linksys WGA54G, Netgear WEG111, Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP, etc.) or a wireless bridge (Linksys WETG54, etc.), would any or all of these alone, when connected to MediaMVP, be enough to make it work wirelessly? Does anyone have any thoughts as to which ones might offer superior fuctionality/performance/expandability? 2. In a more technical slightly off-topic question, I have looked around a lot for an answer to this question, but what are the similarities/functionality overlap and differences between a game adapter vs. a bridge vs. an access point vs. a router? 3. Is it likely that a MediaMVP with wireless built in would be superior to one which has been done makeshift? (This is probably only something one can guess at this point, but I was thinking there may be some advantage to it being embedded, perhaps skipped some steps, but on the hand, wireless devices built by companies specializing in wireless devices could be superior also.) 4. I have read many times on this website where people have successfully set things up wirelessly, and yet the person who appears to be the main developer (screen-name Sub, but I do not know his name yet) of GB-PVR says that it is not yet set up to support wireless, but will be somewhat soon. So, I am wondering whether he is saying that he is just going to do things to make sure it performs more reliabily/easily, but that it is still working for people even before that, or whether the GB-PVR won't work at all with a wireless setup. 5. I happen to have a Playstation 2, and have wondered that if I have the wireless hardware component I could use it for both the MediaMVP and the Playstation 2, perhaps even with a splitter. Has anyone had any experience with this? 6. I saw that they were selling the non-wireless MediaMVP for $40-50 at RadioShack last Fall. Does anyone know it periodically goes down to that price via either rebates or sales, or did I just miss that boat? Any help with these questions would be much appreciated. I have searched through this website and read a lot, but I haven't been able to ascertain an answer to these questions. Thanks in advance for your help!

I use two Belkin Routers F5D1230-4 Routers that can act as bridges. They are cheap and work well (at least for me as well as my Netgear did). I set the MVP unit as a Bridge, then there are three open Lan ports for Playstations or whatever. I can't say that I never have problems with my GBPVR/MVP setup, mainly the microwave, but most of the issues are not due to wireless (i.e. bitrate of the wireless stream).
If you already have a wireless setup, for less then $40 you can make an MVP wireless and be able to upgrade to a higher rate wireless whenever you want. Also, I saw a Fry's ad that had a 108mps LAN access point for $30 and a 108mps router for $30. I think their generic MIMO gear is about $60 (but I don't know if it's bridgeable).

Do the Belkins only bridge to other Belkins, or anything? I have a Netgear WGR614v5 and would like to get my MVP wireless. I think I remember reading this Netgear doesn't support bridging with other routers of the same model. And for some inexplicable reason the Netgear game adapters are more expensive than anything else they make, even though they should be more simple. Something cheaper would be good, but not if it doesn't work, obviously.

JonnyCam Wrote:54Mbs is heaps of bandwidth to play even the biggest MPGs? I don't know if 54Mbps is "heaps" of bandwidth. I use my wireless 54g network and I have a wired MVP that connects to an Airport Express that acts as a bridge to my Belkin router. That just barely works (the router and the Airport Express are at 2 ends of the house). Occasionally the video stalls for a few seconds, but for the most part I can watch an entire movie without problems. If there is ANY way you can have a fully wired network, I would definitely go for that. My friend has done that and he has flawless performance, really.

Per Agent007's message above, does anyone have a WGA54G (wireless game adaptor) working with an MVP and if so, how well does it work?
P.S. Tipstir, you got to remember the rule: B = bytes, b = bits (hehehe, sorry, couldn't resist! ) |
