and if so, is it also possible to edit out the begining and end of each recording?

If you don't want to convert to Divx/Xvid, Use Nero's DVD creator, set to the lowest quality. If you do it set to two pass, you will find the quality pretty good. You should be able to get 3-4hrs of shows per disk. It will keep or covert to PAL or NTSC easily as well.

Great - So can you literally just drag and drop into Nero and it does all the authoring for you?

Only potential problem is that I'm not sure if dvb recordings are dvd compliant - does anyone out there know for sure?

capture in low bitrate 2000-2200 and use Ulead Movie Factory to author the DVD into iso image. If the iso image is bigger than the 4.5 gig, use dvdshrink to shrink it down to fit into the blank dvd.

Keep everything in mpg format because it is dvd compliant, and there should be no conversion process involve while authoring. This should fit 4 hrs into a single layer dvd.

For trimming and editing MPG and other files the best program I've found is the wonderful VideoReDo - http://www.videoredo.com . Very simple and very responsive interface that allows editing out of commercials etc. Does a lot more besides.

Continuous development and great support too.

And, no, I do not have any association with the company. Just very impressed - so impressed I bought it!

Pretty much. You can do editing, too. I've used MPGs from recordings, Divx, Xvids, etc....it didn't care.

I think they have a free trial. There are probably free alternatives, but this is one of the more painless.
