Verizon Fios service with GBPVR

Does anyone have experience with Verizon FIOS and GBPVR? I considering switching off of cable, but I don't want to waste my two PVR 150's.

There are hints on the FIOS website that the TV and internet service share a common router, and that you can send data over it (to the MVP? maybe?).

Also does anyone have experience working with two tuners and one set-top box?

This is not a fully knoledgeable response but a well educated guess.

FIOS should be looked at as just a different transport system. Instead of coax you have fiber. That said, the TV system used with FIOS is IPTV and not RF as most basic cable is.

Your question is two parts The router and the set top box. I have not see what they give you for a router but I'm going to guess its just a router. The fiber plugs into it and you get ethernet out. So I'm going to guess you can use a MVP with the router. But, if you think your MVP is going link up to your FIOS IPTV service stop. Its not going to happen. The MVP needs a server/client arrangement to work. Your PC with GBPVR or the Hauppague software is the server, and the MVP is the client. But I'm willing to bet the the router included in the FIOS package is just a residentual gateway device so it should allow the signal to pass from your PC to the MVP with no extra hardware.

The set-top-box. Again I have no idea what Verizon is using for a set top box. I'm going to guess it has a coax output and the common audio L/R and video. It might even have a S/PDIF output. That would be nice for Digital sound to your Home theater or PC if you have a S/PDIF input. (not all do). There is a chance that if the set top box uses standard IR remote codes it might work out-of-the-box, or you might have to learn the IR codes. If it uses RF to work Your going to have a problem. As far as 2 150'S The short answer is you need a set top box for each. But getting the IR blaster to work on both will be your problem. I think GBPVR only supports one blaster at a time.

Let me know how it works out. Were a long way from getting FIOS up here in the Vermont woods but it would be nice to dream.

Thanks for the input A_Brass. They still haven't run the actual fiber yet, but it's very close. I think your right that I won't be able to run over their system. I believe that the router will be in the garage (too far and difficult to run additional Cat 5), so I will probably stay wireless.

Regarding the set-top boxes, I suppose that I can have one card record the complete line-up (if it's not rf) and the other card the analog channels. That would be less than ideal. Their PVR is $12.95 a month and of course limited compared to the MVP setup.

You can bet that all of the Verizon phone techs will not know squat!

Interesting, everthing I have read indicated Verizon was going to use a IPTV platform. I just followed the link above and it states that verizon will use RF and IPTV for video on demand. So the router must have a Fiber input and RF and ethernet out.

So I guess you perhaps you can use your 150 for the basic channels. I'm not really sure anymore.

I couldn't locate the model of the boxes on the motorola website.
But, i'm still probably a yr away from fios anyways.
They are only just installing fibre in a test neighborhood now.

I am still not clear if you can get all the channels without the box (I'm sure you don't get PPV, music etc.).

Re: protocols used, I am nearly positive Verizoin is not IP based (ATT is) as they are fiber to the house, not just to the curb like ATT.

Verizon is not IPTV, except for for video on demand. It is cable over fiber. I think it is actually a DirecTV source. ATT IPTV is not yet available on fiber to home. ATT IPTV is available on fiber to the node. Fiber to the node is copper between the node and the home.

If anyone out there has Verizon FIOS TV and wants to test the DirecTV channel changer using the low speed data port. I'm willing to work with them to see if it can be modified to work with those receivers.
I've got an update for the current version that supports the latest receivers. However, FIOS should be coming shortly to my house and I would be interested in switching if they made TV available also.
