Hello. GBPVR newbie - and MythTV refugee - here Smile

I have the system in my sig running headless and an MVP connecting to it over my wired network. I don't play video locally on the PC at all; it's 100% done on the MVP.

(Digression... I tried running a MythTV client on the MVP, but setting up mvpmc on an H4 MVP seemed quite involved and underdocumented)

Anyway. So far GBPVR is reasonably good except that I get a fair amount of blockiness, some audio sync issues etc. It's a new system (with some old parts) so of course there's still some issues to be ironed out.

My G400 video card is an obvious candidate for the source of these problems (I'm using PVRX2/VMR9). However I have a question about that: does it matter what type of video card I'm using if I never actually view video on the PC itself, but only on the MVP?

The video card has zero impact on the MVP.

If you mean blockyness in the video, then with a DVB-T capture device its probably due to the bitrate the broadcaster is using. Unfortunately there wont be much you could do about this one.

I'm not aware of any audio sync issues with MPEG2 playback, but can happen with AVI files. I just stear people away from AVI files on their MVP if they can help it. These type of files cant be played natively by the device, and the on-fly-transcoding to MPEG2 can introduce problems.

Thanks for the feedback. The audio sync seems to only be a problem with MPEG recordings - typically those that have lots of blockiness. I haven't gotten round to trying transcoding yet, so don't know if it'd also happen with AVIs.

It being some kind of broadcast problem is lent some weight by the fact that it seems to happen a lot more on some channels (Five US) than others (Virgin 1).

Any other UK users notice quality differences like this between channels?

[edit]
This is for recordings, mainly. I don't watch a lot of live TV. Might it be mux-related?

Yes, certainly the sync could be. What is the output of muxchecker on your machine?

GB-PVR has detected the following multiplex filters on your machine:

Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: c:\program files\devnz\gbpvr\MpgMux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.1727

I havnt used that specific version, but you could try other version of the Cyberlink or even the ATI mux.

Remember to deregister old versions of the Cyberlink mux when trying new ones, otherwise it'll continue to use the one that was registered first.

I think a lot of people get good results with VERSION: 5.0.1307 - might be worth trying...
