A few questions by a newbie

Hello,

1. Is there anyway to automatically delete(remove) commercials while it is recording the they are not in the mpeg file?

2. For Video Decoder, Audio Decoder, and Audio Renderer, I just have "System Default".. should I change this? The pull down boxes have a few different ones listed.

3. What is FFDShow post-processing and should I enable it?

4. What is the easiest and best program to remove padding at the beginning and end.. and commercials from an mpeg file?

5. Is DivX the best format for smaller file sizes yet still good quality? Should I automatically convert to DivX?

I read about comskip.exe, but ti looks like it just writes them to a file and them doesnt play those parts back. I am looking for somethat that actually does not record commercials into the file at all.

You can use comskip with comclean or videoredo or cuttermaran to cut out the commercials afterwards. I don't know of a way to not record commercials.

There is no way you can realy reliable detect commercials at real-time.
And I do mean realy real-time.
So there is no way you can prevent the commercials to become part of the recording.

and to answer your other questions:
2) generally, if system default is working leave it alone. (as you learn more about GBPVR and read up in the forums you may find some reason thats worth changing for - but until then, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!)
3) FFDshow offers a raft of tweaks (e.g. audio and video filters etc,) but in my experience it caused more bother than it did good. Leave it off unless you really like fiddling more than watching TV
4) see replies to Q1. try google. at worst you could use windows movie maker which comes installed for free on your windows machine already.
5) swings and round-abouts. I'm sure there's forums all over the web where you can blab on ad-infinatum about the relative merits of divx vs. x vs. y. For me I leave everyting as it is recorded (mpeg or ms-dvr depending on your set-up). Why should I waste my processor time re-encoding? If you're running out of disk space, buy another drive - they're cheap as chips these days. I have the divx codecs installed for playback only as it is quite a common format for downloaded vids.

My vote for editing software goes to VideoRedo. It is very fast and simple to use. It's not free but it is the only software I have paid for on my PVR system.

But, I felt guilty for buying this and so I sent sub an equal amount since GBpvr is certainly worth more to me than the editing software.....

Another vote for Videoredo plus. For quick editing/rendering it can't be beat. You will never regret the money. It's good for stitching files together, too.
