AverMedia UltraTV 550

Does anyone know or can someone tell me if the GBPVEr supports the AverMedia UltraTV 550 PCI Card? I wanted to buy either that card or the Hauppauge PVR350 but the AverMedia UltraTV 550 is cheaper.

I'm not sure if the AverMedia UltraTV 550 would work. The answer is "possibly", but would require a new section to be added to the direct.ini file.

You're probably better off with a PVR350 or PVR250. These are better supported by most existing PVR software (including GB-PVR).

That's what I thought I guess I'll go with the PVR 350. One other quick question. With GB-PVR and PVR 350 can I output with composite or S-Video to a TV?

The AverMedia UltraTV 300 series replaced the M150 series cards.  The AverMedia UltraTV 500 series replaced the M170 series cards.

Sub, why does GBPVR support the M150 and not the M179?  Is it because of the different encoder?

I would guess that the UltraTV 300/350 (x50's have radio and tv) should work since it's the successor to the M150 cards. **This is incorrect, the UltraTV 300/350 are software compression.

Sub, if I were to get one of these cards and try it out would you mind experimenting with INI changes with me to see if the other AverMedia cards can work with just a quick change like that?

I just really don't like the Hauppauge cards, their manufacturing quality produces cards that don't last more than a year or two.

**The AverMedia UltraTV 500/550 cards have hardware encoders. And the x50 models are just the radio option.

The M150 is supported because another user had the card, created the INI settings required, and sent them to me. Its likely to also work with the M179, but I dont know of anyone that has tried it so I dont have a INI section for it..

I'm happy to help you as you experiment with the INI. Let me know when you get the card. I dont know anything about these cards, so I'll just have to assume they're based on the standard Conexant designs (same encoders etc). If they a really different, then they're unlikely to work with GB-PVR.

I have the ultra300 card and I can attest to the fact that it does not work with this program. It seems to fail to communicate with the gb-pvr recording service when you click on the live tv button. If I can help out in anyway just let me know cuz I would really like to try out your program.

Unfortunately the avermedia ultra300 cards dont feature the hardware mpeg2 encoder that is required for it to function with GB-PVR. sorry.

Guess it's time to start comparing specs and seeing what cards have similar encoders to other cards already supported. I'm sure there's 1 or 2 missing that could be added to the list to entice people even more.

Any thoughts on supporting the Avermedia Ultra 500/550 boards - both which feature hardware MPEG2 encoding?

I suspect these would work, but I'm not going to buy one to try it. If anyone has one they're welcome to try adding the required section to direct.ini, described in a few other posts here.
