Unfortunately when I discovered my Lifeview TV Walker mini was a noisy and rather unreliable piece of schistosity, I hurriedly went out and bought a Hauppauge PVR-150. A bit too hurriedly as it turned out, as I bought the OEM 1042 Model, without the remote, but I justified this to myself by:
(a) knowing I had an MVP (which I use 80%~90% of the time anyway) that has a remote and
(b) I could add a remote later and
© It was not too expensive given I had already bought the Lifeview (and abandoned it as a rather bad joke).
As it turned out (b) is partially a no-go either, as the PVR-150 Model I have, (the 1045 model), doesn't have a 1/8 mini jack for a blaster/transmitter, so couldn't be plugged in directly. Never mind, there are other options (I think).
Anyway, I bought a USB-UIRT which changes channels STB beautifully. As an aside, I'm still amazed that I can sit on the sofa downstairs, press my MVP remote, that sends a signal to the MVP, which routes it though the Ethernet cable to my wireless bridge router, that sends a command wirelessly upstairs to my main router, which zaps it through a wired Ethernet cable to my PC (which is my GBPVR centre) then via USB to my USB-UIRT, which zaps my STB which changes channel and sends the video back through a reverse path all the way to the TV. Amazing stuff when you think about it.
So I was sitting on my bed last night playing some music though WMP player on the PC and I thought, well, I could use GBPVR to do this and with a remote I wouldn't have to even get my butt off the bed to skip a song or two.
So my real question is this. I want to sit on my bed and turn on GBPVR (on the PC) and listen to music, maybe watch TV. Are the following all viable options and if so, which option would you recommend?
(a) Use my existing MVP remote to send signals directly to the USB-UIRT's receiver (cheapest option if it works) i.e. not via the MVP Box, which will be downstairs. As I understand the remote control wiki entry and the one on IRREMOTE.INI via IR32.exe, this is only applicable with the Receiver/Blaster that comes with the PVR-150 (or PVR500), so will the Hauppauge MVP remote work at all, say via HIP or Girder?)
(b) Purchase just a MCE Remote (apparently they all come with the Emitter and Receiver ... is it possible to JUST buy the remote itself?) and try and use it with the USB-UIRT that I already have.
© Purchase a MCE Remote with the IR receiver (‘beanbag’
, and IR Blaster transmitter and try and use its own native transmitter with GBPVR and the STB (for TV)?
(d) Just leave the MVP remote downstairs, forget the MCE Remote entirely and purchase a 3rd Party Remote (Snapstream's Firefly etc.) and try and use that with the USB-UIRT that I already have.
Final Q: If I decide to buy another PVR-150 and get one with the MCE remote, can I assume it is correct to say that this remote will control GBPVR (via the USB-UIRT), and as it is GBPVR that controls the two receivers, I will be able to control both tuners, even though one PVR-150 is an OEM device? It looks like this "should be" the case as in the same way the USB-UIRT is a USB device, you are sending signals to the GBPVR program (which controls the PVR150) NOT directly to the PVR-150 card, but I want to be sure.
Lots of Q's, Cheers
k.
[EDIT] I did do a search before asking all these Q's, and one of the best posts was this one.
[EDIT] Is the MediaMVP remote equivalent to a MCE remote?
