Ok, so I am new to this. So I expect to get some newbie treatment...and I did search for info, but I think its what I do not know that I do not know that is impairing me. I have a TUL Theater Pro 550 PVR card, and a bunch of cyberlink "free" s/w. I finally took all of that off the system. I installed GBPVR and found I did not have an encoder to view video. My question relates to encoders. Does one have to always purchase an encoder? If so, what is the best encoder for this board? I downloaded one from nVidia (free trial) but it does not work well. I do not mind paying for one, but I just want the best one for this card. BTW, why does a card not come with the s/w encoder?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

You're missing a DEcoder. One is installed with the Cyberlink software that comes with your card. If that software is installed, GB-PVR will be able to use that decoder.

My bad. There must be one somewhere because the tv viewer that comes with the card works. But there is nothing in that directory that would indicate such s/w. Anybody who uses Tul, do you know where it mught be and what it is called?

I own a TUL theater 550 Pro.

The only software supplied with my card was the Cyberlink application. I am not aware of the "TV viewer" application that you mentioned.

The encoder is hardware on the card itself. You do not need a software encoder.

You DO REQUIRE a software decoder to be installed. The simplist solution for a newbie is to install the supplied Cyberlink software which will install the required software decoder for GBPVR to run. However if you want to be more advanced, you can source freeware software decoders on the Internet, for example "DScaler5", or you can purchase software decoders like the Nvidia Purevideo decoder.

I did download the Nvidia Pure Video decoder, but the playback is awful. Its possible I have done something incorrect... who knows. Let my get ahold of the Dscaler and see.

Thanks,

The key to good picture quality is a video card that supports hardware temporal-spatial de-interlacing and configuring the video decoder to use it.

If you have a video card that does support hardware deinterlacing, and your CPU is 2GHz or higher, then configure Purevideo to:
- Hardware acceleration enabled
- Prefer VMR9
- Deinterlacing control: Automatic
- Deinterlacing mode: VMR Default
And configure GBPVR to VMR9 or VMR9 Custom Renderer

For more info, search the forum for video card recommendations, hardware deinterlacing, and decoder registry patch
