I was wondering if there is a full description somewhere (and if not could someone write one) of how to setup the web interface so I can schedule show recordings remotely. Obviously a lot of people use it, but I'm not sure what (if anything) I need to do to set it up.

Hi thisguy,

To get the GB-PVR web server working you need to enable it in the GB-PVR config app. The default port number it will be listening on is 7467, which you can change if you prefer. You'll also want to set the username and password that is used to login. "Ok" out of the config once you've changed the settings, then visit http://localhost:7647/gbpvr/index.aspx and you should be away.

Obviously if you need to access this from a remote network (like your workplace), then you'll need to find the IP address for your machine and use it in the place of "localhost". If you have a static IP address this will be relatively straight forward. If you have a dynamic IP address that is allocated by your ISP, and changes regularly, then you'll need to look into one of the services like dynip which provide ways to determine your IP address.

I had no problem getting
http://localhost:7647/gbpvr/index.aspx
working from home (sitting at the computer). Now I'm at work and I tried to connect replacing localhost with my ip address, and it didn't work. I'm pretty sure the router is affecting it. I would think I need to go into my router and tell it to forward port 7647 to my computer. Does that sound right? Any other ideas of what it could be?

Maybe I should have tried that before making this post, but like I said I'm at work, so I couldn't.

Hey Thisguy,

I just set this up this morning and it worked fine.  I 'm not sure what Kind of router you have, but hopefully it's a D-Link like mine.  What I did was go into the router config usually 192.168.0.1 and go go the advanced tab.  You have to setup a virtual server so that when you try to hit it offsite it knows where to send the request.

Here's how I set mine up...

Name: GBPVR
Private IP: (your internal IP) 192.168.0.101
Protocol Type: I set mine to Both, just to cover my behind
Private Port: 7647
Public Port: 7647 (again, I wasn't exactly sure, but this works for me!
Schedule: Always

Now when you hit the web interface from outside, you have to use your routers IP address.  If you go to the status tab on your router config it will be listed under the WAN section... let's assume that it's 111.222.33.44.  Note that this IP may change from time to time depending on your provider and how their DHCP pool works.  There are free services like dyndns.org that will make this easy on you if this is your case.

Now while offisite use this address:

http://111.222.33.44:7647/gbpvr/Login.aspx  If you're doing this at work you may have firewall issues there, but changing the public port may fix that (anyone else want to chime in on that part?)

Another helpfull item, if your IP address changes often there are many free services to give you a name for your home. I use www.dyndns.org and most Lynksys and DLink routers support it internally so you can set it up in the router and the router will keep it up to date. There are many free and pay dynamic IP services, I just focused on dyndns.org because most routers support it.

Most business firewalls are to keep people from coming into thier building on those ports. If you start a connection from inside your work to your PC, with your router setup properly, you should be able to connect and maintain the connection. (You initiated the connection so the firewall will let you through)
There are some network managers that will totally block certain ports, like Kazaa & IM & Net Radio, but usually those are only specific ports and not a full range of ports. If you are blocked you may have to try different port to get through. (You can try 80 web, 21 or 20 ftp, 53 or 110 email ports)
