experience with 7200.8 hard drives?

How many people here are using Seagate 7200.8 series drives; the 400gig drives are a really good deal at the moment. With a 5 yr warranty.

There is some complaint about failure rates though. Losing all your data in 6 months would be no fun, even if it is just TV.

Success or failure stories?

I have not used them, but if its such a good deal get 2 or 3, and put them in a raid configuration, then even if you lose a drive you will not lose the data.

I have a 160 GB and a 300 GB. One is brand new, others been churning with recordings for more than a year. Absolutely quiet, and never had a failure of any sort. In my pre-purcahse research, I got the impression that they failed less than most competitors.

Company was also excellent with rebates (unlike the the idiots at Soyo), if that's part of your deal.

Had a 80Gb 7200.7 as my system drive for a few years now and I added a 250gb 7200.10 about 18months ago and both run flawlessly.

The .7's seems pretty good- storagereview.com data suggests that they are more reliable than 85% of drives in general. the .8's though, are only 10% more reliable than other drives. The .8's have a pretty decent sample size and that's not the horror story statistically that I was expecting based on usrr comments in forums elsewhere.

$100 for the PATA 400gig. I'm giving it a shot.
