I have a similar issue.

I recently upgraded to 0.98.8b and just installed it on another computer to try client mode using file sharing mode (I couldn't get streaming to work - I get audio but no video).

I shared the video directories (liveTV and video playback) and setup the paths in the config. It seems to run okay (can view the TV Guide, see and modify scheduled recordings), but when I try to view a recording in the video library by double-clicking the filename, nothing happens. I tried the Play button and got the "Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object" message.

I tried to double-click on several files, and one or two of them would make the screen flash, but still would not play. Most did nothing. I found one file that would play, but it was an MPEG I created from VHS with a different program (but others created this same way would not play). Very weird.

I attached my log file from the client and the server, which shows a bunch of attempts, but the last two show a file that didn't work and the one file that works, in that order. I did notice that the log reports a video resolution of 0 x 0 for the file that doesn't work and a resolution of 320 x 240 for the file that does work. When I play these on the server the log file reports the first as 720 x 540, not 0 x 0.

Any ideas?

-Brad

Make sure have an mpeg2 decoder installed. Also, it look like the Microsoft MPEG splitter is not being found on that machine, so try running:

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mpg2splt.ax

Thanks, that was it. I had just finished a new install on my wife's laptop and forgot about that. I did install Dscaler4 but haven't figured out how to get it to show up in GBPVR as an MPEG decoder. I had WinDVD installed and was able to select the decoder included with that package. It worked, but the video was still jumping a bit. I applied Tipster's registry tweaks for networking and that helped significantly, but it's still jumps a little.

Any thoughts on ways to improve this? Do you think a different decoder would work better (be more efficient?)?
