I was having a similar problem, live tv was complete static, with sound with the pvr-500. Did as you suggested Sub and swapped device numbers and now I can see live tv. Picture still isn't perfect but I think I can play with some settings and get that better.

I even swapped device numbers back so the 2nd tuner in the pvr-500 was listed as the 2nd device and live tv went back to being all static

I thought that would be the case. Its not common, but there are a few people with the problem. From what I've read, it sounds like buggy drivers or hardware to me.

I was able to watch live tv fine.
Started a recording, just a random show, started watching live tv again. Picture is fine when I'm watching live tv. Since I have kworld tuner for HD OTA, I decided to record using the 2nd tuner in the pvr-500 and watch live tv with the HD. After about 10 minutes of recording, I decided to check the first recording out, I'm still recording off the 2nd tuner and the recording of the first show is all static, just as if I am watching live tv on it. The 2nd recording which is actually recording off the 1st configured device looked fine.

I've just started using gb-pvr so I'm fairly new to it but it is my understanding that for recording, it will start with the first available tuner but as you said for live tv, it will pull that from the last device?
So I have a pvr-500
first tuner set up as pvr-500, configured as device 2
second tuner set up as pvr-500 with FM, configured as device 1

So I should pull live tv from the first tuner since it is last device but the first recording should come from the 2nd tuner which is configured as the first device?

Did I explain that right?
Since both times I have gotten static on the screen, either in live tv or recording, its been from the second tuner, that would almost lead me to believe its a hardware issue.
I'll try to reintall the drivers to see if that works. I want to reinstall winxp on this machine anyway so I may end up doing that just to make sure the registry is fresh.

This is the driver that I am using with the pvr-500

Is that the correct one?

When GB-PVR is looking for a device to record a TV show, it'll start from the top of the capture source list in the config app and work its way down, looking for an available capture source with the required channel. Live TV does the opposite, starts at the bottom of this list and works its way up.

Either hardware or the drivers. From memory, they also use different makes/models of tuner for each of the two PVR500 tuners. It could be a software bug with the drivers for the specific combination of tuners you have on your PVR500.

Interesting. Are you able to record shows without static and watch live tv now that you have switched your device numbers around? I'll have to give that a shot.

Nope. 2nd tuner on the pvr 500 always shows static. Turns out I have a bad tuner. I disabled the first tuner in my system to force wintv to use that tuner. Wouldn't even detect channels 2-4. 5-16 were almost complete static, got progressively better til 78 but never a clear picture that was provided on the first tuner. I'm ended up doing some searching and I guess a lot of people have had problems with the 2nd tuner on the pvr 500. So I'm returning the card for a new one.

I was afraid of that. Are you returning your card to Hauppauge or the dealer from which you purchased the card?

I wanted to post one more message to this thread to let everyone know that my previous problems have been resolved.

The cause of my problem turned out to be a defective Hauppauge MCE 500 Tuner Card. The tuner card had one tuner that worked well and one that did not. I worked with the Hauppauge technical support representatives and was able to confirm the problem by:

1. Removing all existing software and registry entries.
2. Installing the latest drivers.
3. Installing WinTV2000
4. Disabling one Tuner after the other in the Windows Control Panel and then viewing the same channel in WinTV2000.

By disabling one tuner in the control panel, WinTV was forced to use the other tuner on the card. The result indicated that Tuner1 had a clear picture and Tuner2 had a fuzzy picture.

I returned the card to Hauppauge and they sent me a replacement. Both tuners work well in the new card and I have no more problems.

Thanks for all your help.
