Newbie Needs Help with Hauppauge 500MCE w/ remote

Ok, I'm totally new here and just figure out a little about this software. Please excuse my ignorance because I don't know any better. I just got my 500MCE card in the mail, and installed all the required software. I'm running XP professional. When I plugged in the ir bean bag and configured the software the remote hasn't worked. I can do all other things but I can't get this to work. I got the 253 package which includes the 45 button silver remote. I downloaded HIP to fix the issue, but that doesn't do anything. I noticed that some people were referring to a ir.exe file. In my instal cd it didn't include that file, and i downloaded the ir file for the 350 but that isn't working either. Can anyone give me a hand with this? Please help me walkthrough so I dont think this is a waste and give up. you can email me, benjamin_lamborn@hotmail.com if you have a lengthy explaination.

You would need the ir.exe from hauppauge site. Plus the irremote.ini from the hauppauge site. If I remember correctly, the irremote.ini should go in the c:\windows directory, and the ir.exe can live wherever you want it to. You just have to make sure it's running (either by starting it manually each time, or by creating a shortcut to it in Windows' "startup" folder in the start menu.

Then, in GBPVR's configuration program, don't forget to click "fix hauppauge remote", and set the remote type to "hauppauge(default)". That should be it for the remote...

Isn't the remote that comes with the 500 actually an MCE remote? Mine was (is).

Try setting the remote type to MCE in the config and see if it works. Then you don't need Hip or ir.exe, etc.

If it's an MCE remote, when you plug it into a USB port and them look in the Device Manager you should see the eHome device under USB devices (IIRC).

Are you using the remote to control GB-PVR or are you trying to get it to control a set top box?

My understanding is that the actual 'Hauppauge' remote receiver plugs into the card and requires the ir.exe to make it work. I had one with an old WinTV card a while back.

The MCE remote 'beanbag' has a USB interface. It will work with the existing drivers in XP Pro or MCE (and in XP Home if you copy the drivers from XP). You select MCE as the remote type in GB-PVR's config.

It's a bit confusing since it comes from Hauppauge with a card but it's actually an MCE remote.

Then again, I could be wrong...

Again, I'm assuming he wants to use the remote to control GB-PVR. If he's trying to control a set top box with the IR blaster, it's a different story (altho the MCE remote blaster works fine for me using the 'native' GB-PVR MCE blaster driver).

I think you are correct, I have the same remote, it does say ehome. But my copy of Pro didn't include all the drivers I need. Can you send me the irbus.sys to me? Benjamin_lamborn@hotmail.com. It's a little frustraiting because I can't find the file anywhere and I'm having issues getting it from microsoft. I never had wintv so I don't have the file, and I don't care about using a set top, just basic cable with gbpvr. If you or anyone can send me the missing file I would greatly appriciate it. I did show the other drivers and it did go a little futher for recognition, but I'll need the .sys to make it work. Thanks so much for you help.

You can try following the directions here to get your remote working. It is a little out of date but should point you to one possible path to remote control.

Hey zed, does your SMK-sourced MCE remote control GB-PVR _and_ drive the IR blaster without having to rely on HIP? I followed the HipGuide but many buttons don't work as I think they should. If it is possible to change channels on my external settop without HIP I'd like to give that a try.

I don't want to poach the OPs thread so if it requires more than a short explanation just tell me and I'll start a new one.

It should work fine in GB-PVR with the remote type set to MCE. If you also need to use the IR Blasters, then you'd probably need to stick with HIP.

That's what I was afraid of. Seriously, I like HIP and it is very useful but isn't entirely intuitive for me. I was hoping to not have to reprogram every frickin' button on my remote.

What is "the 'native' GB-PVR MCE blaster driver" that zed refers to? I've only tried the ".exe channel changer" interface and didn't know of any alternatives.

There is one, but just after I started work on it, HIP appeared, and they have much more time to focus on this one area than me, so I never bothered finishing mine off. It sort of works, but isnt really tweakable if you find the delays between digits doesnt suit your set top box.
