Which Tuner Card for AMD Dual Core???

Hi all,

I've had problems with my tuner card after moving to an "AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core" PC for some reason. For background refer here.

Which value for money tuner card do people with an AMD Dual Core recommend for GB-PVR usage?

Here's the list of tuner cards available from my local shop so a recommendation for one of these would be great (i.e. value for money, and confirmed working on an AMD Dual Core with GB-PVR)

I'm running GB-PVR on an Athlon 64 x2 4200+ Manchester based system (ASUS A8N5X nVidia mobo). Successfully using Hauppauge PVR-500 analog card and AVerTVHD A180 digital (ATSC) card. I assume the ATSC card is similar to the AVerMedia DVB-T cards you run Down Under.

I don't use the NTSC TV tuner on the PVR-500 card at present, but when I tried it I was not impressed by the RF tuner capabilities. The picture always had a lot of analog and video noise; a lot more than all the other TV tuners on that wire. The embedded MPEG2 hardware encoder is excellent, however.

Tks Braklet - Do you/others know whether any of the digital (DVB-T) cards in the $100-$200 price range offer any benefits regarding off-loading load on the PC CPU itself? e.g. maybe the encoding or decoding aspects?

No they dont, but some of the bigger name cards feature better drivers with more regular driver updates - which ultimately counts for a lot. Nothing worse than being stuck with some no name brand card, with crappy drivers that never get fixed...

Sub, can I ask which brands you consider ok. Like which brands from this list here are ok from your experience supporting GB-PVR list of tuner cards. Feel free to pick a couple off the list as a recommendation if you wish (i.e. as a DVB-T tuner internal PC card - I'm assuming an internal card is better than getting a USB based one?)

We dont have DVB-T here, so I dont have any first hand experience with DVB-T cards, but from the number of people using them, the Hauppauge Nova-T cards seem to perform pretty well for most people. (though I dont see it on that list)

No problems with a Nova-T here (used with UK Freeview).

Some PVR-500s had issues running on XP with an AMD dual-core. Also, the older 500s had Philips tuners and the newer ones have Samsung tuners. A lot of people have had problems with the quality on the Samsung tuners. That leads me to believe that you have a Samsung-based 500, and they fixed the lockup issue with XP with the newer Samsung 500s.

Interesting, thanks for the link. I had terrible NTSC tuner quality when I tried it out. Since getting the ATSC receiver to work correctly, I haven't had to worry about NTSC tuning. But I will keep my eyes on Hauppauge driver updates.
