re: Transcoded AVI won't skip FF/RW like recorded TV

This has been an ongoing issue, that I just accepted, but I have to ask:

I can skip forward and back a MPG that was recorded off air (or digital broadcast) quite well on the MVP. I never lose audio sync...

But the mpg generated with ffmpeg, during the on the fly transcode loses sync quite often, so much that I have hesitate, restarting a video, and skipping forward, or trying to replay some words I may have missed and want to hear again...

It's like the Transcoded mpeg isn't as sturdy as the one recorded off air...

Is it bitrate and resolution that's causing this? Does FFMPEG just not transcode as good a resulting MPEG as a native recorded MPEG?

Yes, that is the case. ffmpeg is known to take a few shortcuts in its generation of SCR and DTS (a couple of the reference clocks used in MPEG files). I read a few emails from their mailing lists archives where they indicated they're aware of some of the shortcomings in this area.

Thanks sub... Have you also read that they were planning to do something about it?

Also, I know that there are several others here that use MEncoder as an alternative to FFmpeg. What has been your experience?

No, not specifically. They were suggestions for how to improve the calculation of these fields. The comments were going back as far as 2003, so I'm not expecting quick fixes.

I've never really used it myself, so not the best person to comment on this.

Ahhh... interesting.

I wondered about that. Recent Transcodes using FFMPEG from H264 and XVID to MPEG2 have had:
  • "slight" audio sync issues and
  • some very weird Backwards skip when I pressed Forwards Skip
  • some odd FF and RW ones..

Any simple recommended Mencoder Front-ends zehd? I think SUPER has it and AVI2MPG but neither worked for me.

I was thinking of including MEncoder support in ZProcess. But a search on the forum indicate that MEncoder transcodes also have FF/RW skip problems...

Well, that puts paid to that ... !Is there any (free :-) ) transcode s/w that does NOT have a FF/RW skip problem?k.

(I haven't quite heard that phrase: 'That puts paid to that' before. Does that mean if you have to pay, you're not interested?)

Anyway, I think I'm going to see what MEncoder acts like when controlled by ZProcess... I like how ZProcess 'tames' ffmpeg. Just think it could be better...
