Long show info text in OSD

Hello,

I read and searched through the forum but didn't find an answer to this (I'm sure there is but this is a bit like the needle and haystack problem):

When showing show information in the TV guide or in the info bar during live-tv, the show text is soooo long that it is not showing up completely.

Is there a way to make it scrolling?
Should I use a different skin?

[offtopic-praise the dev-mode]I recently installed my Hauppauge PVR350 in an old PIII 800 Mhz. I played around with mediaportal, but it was too slow. Then I skipped to Myth on Linux - but I didn't get the card to run - my ignorance probably.

Some days ago, I 'discovered' gbpvr and so far I'm very happy. Thanks to the dev!! I can watch live TV, I can import show information (using jxmltv to build an xml file, i used freqcopy to get the channels right - i live in belgium), I can record and everything. I only get a choppy image during the 2 first seconds in live tv - after that it's pretty smooth. At this moment, I have it running on my monitor.

I'll try to use the TV-out of the PVR350 tonight - but after reading here, that might be a no go. We'll see. I might ebay for a FX5200 card if it doesn't work.

The hauppauge remote (45buttons) also works. Teletext works.

you can edit the skin if you want, just make the OSD larger on the bottom of the screen, or wherever the show info is getting cut off. or if you dont feel like tinkering (even though it is kinda the spirit of this community:p) you can use the community skin, which fatman_do has spent so much time on. I think he has it so the show info shouldnt get cut off, however if your show has a 500 word essay for its description, I think you are just out of luck.


good luck with the 350, it seems to be hit or miss. and I would NOT suggest the fx5200, old nvidia card == tearing in VMR renderer. the VMR renderer is the one that gives you transparency in the OSD, if you want that I suggest trying to find something like a radeon 9600.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking about looking into the skins as well tonight - I'll definitely give the community skin a go.

Different question: can you change the font size of these things - I guess yes - i'll take a look whether I find something in the skin files myself - but help still welcome

Thanks for the graphics card suggestion as well. If my PVR350 out doesn't do what it is supposed to, i'll see what my options are in a financial way - and what there is on ebay and likes.

f*%k!!! besides pic quality, nvidia also has some nice features built into the drivers, like this: after booting without vga connected, the card presumes you have tv-out connected, activates that & deactivates vga completely. care to gues what happens next, if you boot with vga connected and no tv-out? yeah, right, vga still disabled... good luck navigating display properties on SD-TV with smeared fonts & scaling to find the settings to get that damned vga-out reenabled ;-)
at least that's for sure: it will be the last nvidia crap i spent money on. better take your luck with ati, hadn't had so much problems in the past with them.

and on the financial side: better look around which card has no problems with passive cooling. usualy, you'll end up with some older & cheaper model which will help you make your box quiter. even older models should have more than enough horsepower for GBPVR & the like. video card performance usualy only a issue if you also plan to do some up to date power gaming. don't know for sure if video card performance has any impact on HDTV playback, or if the bottleneck there is the cpu..

odd, when i got my HDTV I dont remember it being a pain to get it working over VGA... meh.

the developer of GB-PVR goes by sub on the forums (you probably would have figured it out before too long anyways)

also I would say a radeon 9550 should be the lowest you go with ATI cards, older ones dont work with current drivers. they can be had for <$50 which I would consider to be a worthwhile investment, my 9600 has been so good to me

I was not sure whether sub was the only dev or not. But in this case : thank you sub. If I get this running the way I want, I'll use the donate button on the site.

Well, I've got some good and bad news:

the good: the video out to my tv-scart DID give me image and sound. Yipee!!

the ' a little bad ': The GBPVR menu was a bit out of the image (shifted to upper left) but I've seen a small tweak on the site that may do it. (PVR350 page in manual). but this is minor for now.

the ' omg what now bad': The video (both recorded and live tv) is smooth... for 2 minutes. Then my pc locked up. Reboot (reset button) was the only option... I don't know why...

So, I'll give it another shot, now I've got the logging back to debug instead of the apparently too optimistic error .

help/suggestions are appreciated.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... This is fairly common with PVR350 tv out, and no known work around other than changing motherboards and hoping the new one works better. Its a bug in the driver, that is unlikely to ever be fixed.

About 50% of PVR350 TV out users suffer from this problem, and its the primary reason I no longer support the TV out on this device.

I read about the problems with the PVR350 - after I bought it ah well. I think I will look for a DirectX9 capable video card with tv-out... to solve this.

Anyway, yesterday night I watched live-tv after a reboot (see above for story), for over three hours without problems, with the pvr350 video out. I surfed channels and all, everything went fine. The contrast and intensity of the red channel was a bit high, but there's software out there to tweak it. But I simply forgot the name of it. I'll have to look for it again. Anyway...

I had scheduled to record a program at 11pm while testing and forgot about it. I was still watching live tv at that moment. The machine just froze when it wanted to start recording.

Can anyone tell me what is supposed to happen in such a case - are you supposed to get a popup asking whether to keep watching live tv or to start recording?

it will normally dump you to the main menu if you are watching TV when a recording starts, I dont think there is a popup or anything that tells you why

It indeed did that - i saw the main menu when it froze.
